Re: Religious debate number 23976
Well, no one can fully understand the ancient languages of the bible, since they're... ancient. And, the majority of people don't speak ancient languages.
So, that is why the ancient codex must be translated into the modern languages.
With that in mind, which bible translation do you prefer?
BTW, you meant to say your dad was able to read Latin right? (Roman isn't a language lol)
And even if your dad was able to read latin, the latin bibles he may have read would have to have been translated, since the original bible was written in only Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Re: Religious debate number 23976
greek!!! sorry, you're right, but he spoke greek, not latin. Hm, if I was going to uni this year I'd be learning basic latin
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Latin can be useful, for talking to ruins.

and learning other languages, and history, and learning the roots of most languages used today
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Talking to ruins?
What?
LOL, like in Indiana Jones, he's always reading outloud the stuff inscribed in the ruins. Therefore, talking to ruins.
I get it!
Oh, and latin is very useful. Latin and greek are also useful in the medical field.

Have you seen the documentrys on the History channel and the Discovery channel? Life after people. It really interesting. I would think, that it would take too long for a species to evolve to find our remaining things.
Re: Religious debate number 23976
and in basically all science, as i believ most of if not all of the scientific nomenclature is in latin
Re: Religious debate number 23976
I can summarize history in 2 words if i want. But i don't really need to know the roots of my own language. And Science is the only important thing in which you need latin.
And as for bibles, I have never actually read one.

I thought this way just a think tank wondering what life would be on earth after we're gone. I don't personally believe in Evolution, but I find it an interesting concept.

Well thank about it DW. There is one main god, in let's say, ancient Greek mythology, his name is Zeus. Then there are the minor gods and goddess, Athena, and the like.. Some of those represent the main Angels in Christian belief. Though I'm slightly tired, so what I remember may be slightly askew.

some religions yes have similarities between their holy figures, but it's not the same being shared in all religions.

True, I can't argue with that.

us catholics have a saint for about everything, so other religions think we worship saints more than god. they say during the rapture we are going to stay on earth and burn.
i talked to a non-catholic priest about it before, he tried to explain it all nicely but what he really wanted to say was "you're gonna burn"
do you know anything about catholics DJ?

Re: Religious debate number 23976
I go to a Catholic school. Apparently you people pray to the saints so they can talk to God and intercede on your behalf. At least, that's what I get from theology class and uber-conservative uptight teachers.
Kinda defeats the purpose of having Jesus, you know.

Re: Religious debate number 23976
ive never really got the difference between catholic and protestant, what is the difference they both worshipp the same god
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Protestants that are not Episcopalian/Anglican don't follow Catholic traditions (indulgences, saints, etc.) nor do they have a central authority (Pope.) Strict adherence to the Bible rather than outside interpretations.

yeah, they kind of ignored the no other covenants are needed bit. And technically, worshipping saints and virgin mary as a means to god, is the same as worshipping idols, big no no in the ten commandments
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Well, we bent other races technology so we could, my question is, we are all freaked out by the mayan calendar ending in 2012, will the future races freak out about our calendar ending?

I was actually answering the first post on here, sorry, i thought that was the point. And I never said anything about aliens, so don't attack me on something I never said. Nosterdamus is just as false as the calendar though, people see his predictions as correct because they want something to be afraid of, they want an explanation for the end, just how religion was invented to,well, explain everything they don't understand. Well, that and to try to give reason to life, a goal at the end, you know, heaven or hell, Elysium, Valhalla, Fields of Aaru, Jannat or Jannaham. So, in the end, isn't religion similar to the boogy man? Im speaking about this from a logical point of view, not as a christian, obviously, but disconnection from ones beliefs can bring understanding.

any way tbh it religions fault were not colonising space right now, as they put al technological and scientific advancement down to witch craft simply because it could be explained by the bible

sooo, should i just leave now?
Re: Religious debate number 23976
it's nice to see you're all so cold hearted and close minded to think of everyone religious as just plane and simply stupid idiots
Re: Religious debate number 23976
i dont think of those who follow religion as stupid just that they have been misinformed or that they have not moved in to the 21st century
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Never said idiots, illogical. Your obviously intelligent, much more then any religious person I know in my hometown, they wont even listen to my ideas about religion,Im just an idiot whose going to hell and have no idea what im talking about, but you guys actually say something intelligent in return. I was just saying my side, and that i believe when there are so many religions through out history, what makes you so sure yours is the real one out of the thousands?

so, i am therefore misinformed and haven't moved into the 21st century?
Re: Religious debate number 23976
well in a way yes, the amount of people going to church has been declining for years those who are left are just ignorant of the truth.
no offence.

Re: Religious debate number 23976
because my religion is the only one (that I have been able to find) where the God of the religion, sacrificed themself for their creation, and then rose themself from the dead.

i don;t go to church. perhaps you should do your homework before engaging in a debate becauyse quite frankly it makes you look misinformed and afraid.
Re: Religious debate number 23976
Aaaah... The joy of living in an atheist country...
And i agree with josh and davis, but i dont think trying to inform everyone about it is going to help. Trying to convince them that they're wrong doesnt work, it'll just wii them.

Re: Religious debate number 23976
well, that makes it real? If I write a book, claiming Jim Poper was the son of god, and he destroyed giant alien demon bugs to save us all, then died so we could live on, and it lasts for thousands of years, does that make it real? Your proof is that the book says so?

Re: Religious debate number 23976
what i was stating a fact not passing judgement, i didnt mention you going to church, i said those going to church and following religion with devotion
Re: Religious debate number 23976
no, i use archeological proof, proof of scholars, proof of sight, see, it;s about as scientific as it gets, people just aren't willing to admit it because then it means they;re answerable, and trsut me, people don't like being answerable for their actions and thoughts
