it is before the series, and there is some academy, but i do believe it is during one of the five year missions with kirk commanding. pike is in the movie. there is supposed to be a hell of a lot more action in it than any other trek film, yet still maintaining some form of storyline canon. i think that there is some form of huge space battle, but of what capacity and against who, i'm not certain. the main villain's name is nero, it isn't known of what race he is. the enterprise is a little redesigned. it still holds the shape and form of the old ent, but looks more modern. the girls still wear the skirts (that appears to be an important factor in some of the discussions i've read elsewhere lol) and one other thing to back up why it can't all be at the academy. the whole crew of the enterprise is in it. chekov, sulu, uhura, the whole gang! the fx are done by ilm, and according to abbrams "they're mind blowing" if i remeber anything else, i'll let you know. but keep this in mind, this may turn out to be the coolest trek film any of have seen, and it might turn the tables on the trek franchise, and get it going again, because it appears to me that abbrams knows how to market a film better than braga or berman.
