Re: USS Midnight
She looks nice close up, I'll render a shot but it might take a short while, the model's getting kinda intensive on the renderer
Re: USS Midnight
what's the file size and poly count?

Re: USS Midnight
The model is only 1.8MB and I don't model in poly's, I model in splines/patches and the patch count is 4583
Re: USS Midnight
if splines/patches are like poly's then that around the kinda detail a game would use.

Re: USS Midnight
Patches aren't quite like poly's. See with Poly's, to define a smoother shape, you have to increase the density of the mesh. With splines however, it's like using vector controls, you define the cruve by editing the handles of the spline so the fewer patches/splines you have, the better quality model you have. Now obviously, some models have more patches than others. The Daedalus is currently cruising around 10,000 patches I think and a fellow by the name of Stian just recently completed his model of the Nidaros Cathedral and that model has nearly 1 000 000 patches (which is now like the record for largest density model made in AM I do believe)
Re: USS Midnight
there's this guy called Fracetlsponge1 or somethink, he made an ISD with 1.7 mill poly's and a custom SW themed cruiser that had about 4.8 million polyies.

Re: USS Midnight
Part of it's the angle of the mesh and that the decals get a bit stretched to the mesh, plus some are actual circles and not ovals. But I wouldn't say they're that bulky
Re: USS Midnight
well i've seen a lot of 3d work in my life , bulky might not be the word but is different

Re: USS Midnight
Yeah, they're not quite as thin as the sovvies and whatnot, I'll agree there. I'll do up a side profile more so we can all see the windows better than at that angle there
Re: USS Midnight
also if you can add a shadow or to in the a few random windows it would be great

Re: USS Midnight
Yeah, that's something I thought about, but right now I'm more concerned with getting the model into a complete status. Changing up textures once applied is bit trickier (not like hard though) just tedious, so it's on the last of my concerns list

i am a bit lazy to search but are the specs of the ship ?

What kind of Texture are you going for, Shiny NX class or 24Th century Gray?

I haven't made any up, I got a general idea of the power of the ship though and stuff like that, but I'll make some up for kicks soon
Vedic wrote:What kind of Texture are you going for, Shiny NX class or 24Th century Gray?
Probably more on the shiny side, but not too shiny
EDIT: Well, guess it's kinda a toss up, seems more grey ATM than shiny
Re: USS Midnight
Shiny is the way to go, unless it's pink and shiny.

Hold on, I can get specifics in a few minutes
Re: USS Midnight
the cannon size for a deck is 3.5 meters, from the look of that shot, i would say you have 7-10 decks

Re: USS Midnight
Well, I dunno bout any of that stuff, but I have the ship currently scaled up to 580m in length, 95m in height and 196m in width

Re: USS Midnight
nd it's up to you if you wanna do the maths to get it to fit right with the decks and windows and whatever, I just made it look nice with no real regard for insignificant details like that
Re: USS Midnight
well now you have 27 decks.

My Sovvie model has 7 rows of windows on the engineering hull as does the Midnight and the Sovvie is 685m in length
Re: USS Midnight
Ah the infamous windows of Star trek, never judge a ships size by it's windows. Take DS9 for example, the station has 200 decks but only a few hundred windows.

Re: USS Midnight
Indeed, especially considering it poses no real relevance to anything, just to the egos of nerds who have nothing better to do with their time than to count windows
Re: USS Midnight
well DS9 started showing again, and i got bored and paused the opening scene and did count a few hundred windows. I have no life.

Re: USS Midnight
the numbers of windows give a ship a much better look , making it bigger in the aspect , still this is is very nicely designed , it doesn't matter the size of it

Yes, everyone has blue lights in their quarters and hallways because that is so much more effective

Re: USS Midnight
This is the part where I stop listening to you. I like my deflector dish, as does Krunchy, no it hasn't got textures on it yet, just the glowing, but I like it
Re: USS Midnight
the only thing that needs "tweaking" is the textures, like you said your self.

Re: USS Midnight
Yep, and that's simply cause they're not done yet! And by my calculation, I been on this model for about a month and a half now, so that's half decent considering I'm still plucking away at the Daedalus and it's been over year since I started that model
Re: USS Midnight
Well the color , it seems to different to be a stock ship , so it might be a new class in the 25 century ? And another question , where is the shuttle bay ?
