Media news
Flashtrek Media news service, sponsored by Thingyos, the only cereal for true BEEEEFCAAAKEEEES (Cookie for reference). Now with 80% more steak!
So, let's start with some news from the only place in the industrialized world where the dark ages still reign. Australia!
A recent news report on Australian channel ten has caused a lot of controversy in the gaming world, and amongst people with simple common frakking sense. The report stated that ''The connection between gaming and youth violence is greater than the connection between smoking and lung cancer'' and went on to say that ''The explosion in youth crimes is inextricably linked to violent video games''.
The organization for global use of common sence (OFGUC) has urged Australian citizens with even a small hint of common sense to evacuate the country, as it has been places on the top of the list for countries most likely to create a small intelligence black hole capable of sucking the entire continent into non existence.
Now, i hate to keep beating this alredy pulverized dead horse, but i feel this has to be said. This whole thing is completely retarded. Games are being banned for having a little bit of gore or some sideboob here and there. They dont get an 18+ rating, they get banned. And why? Because the parents are too fat and lazy to keep an eye on what their kids are playing! I mean, how hard can it be? Look at the age rating on the game's case. If it's more than your kid's age, dont buy the frakking game! It's that simple! But no, they have to get Michael Atkinson to keep their children safe, because they're clearly too busy being idiots to keep an eye on their kids.
Now excuse me, i have to go run over the elderly and prostitutes with the car i stole from that family i killed with my bare hands. Just like GTA taught me to.

Re: Media news
I am deffinetly a gamer, and i think one becomes a gamer by playing games for a living, and/or spending there day on multiple sites talking about games and/or playing RPG's untill they can use the consol games and computer that actually runs games.
Re: Media news
To answer my own question, i'm a gamer. All one needs to do to become a gamer is to play a proper (none of that shovelware crap on the Wii) game every once in a while. But there are different degrees of gaming, playing a game every once in a while would only make you a casual gamer. Hardcore gamers are the ones that know some gaming history, a few gaming terms, play games quite often and know what's going on in the gaming world.
I think i'm a step below hardcore gamer, since i havent read up on my gaming history (probably because unlike most hardcore gamers, i was born in the 90's).

Re: Media news
Good. Fuck*ng. God.
That's a direct qoute of a few people on the escapist. And it's all i can say about this news story...
A south korean couple (identified as the ''Kims'' due to korean privacy laws) left their real, 3 months old daughter to die due of malnutrition in favor of taking care of a virtual child on the MMOG ''PRIUS''.
The 41 year old man and his 25 year old wife (am i the only one seeing something slightly strange with the age difference...?) spent up to 12 hours a night at 24 hour internet café's playing games despite having a prematurely born baby at home. The 25 year old woman went to these cafés when she was pregnant despite the clouds of cigarette smoke and large crowds of gamers korean internet cafés are known for. The couple have also confessed to feeding the baby rotten milk powder and often spanking it when it cried.
The couple found the child dead after coming home from a 12 hour gaming session in late september.
In a sick bit of irony, the parents were taking care of a virtual child on the MMO Prius at the time of the real child's death.
South korea has had major issues with gaming addiction, with several cases of exhaustion death, and other gaming related deaths. The problem is believed to be in no small part due to South Korea's 95% broadband acces.
The death of the 3 months old child will msot likely be used by people like Michael atkinson and Jack Thompson, who both are strongly against gaming. It could mean a major setback for the proposed 18+ rating in Australia. which has been strongly opposed by Michael Atkinson.
This is by the way an extreme example of gaming addiction. Gaming related deaths are very rare, even in south korea.

An incredibly dedicated fan of the show Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha has married a body pillow with the image of Fate Testarossa, a popular character from the show, printed on it. He has also been... *sigh* taking the pillow out on dates... And i would rather not think about what he does after the date. Or how their *huge sigh* honeymoon... is going to be like...

Re: Media news
Mafia 2 will include... Boobs. Deluxe boobs, that is. 2K games has signed a deal with a certain gentlemen's magazine called Playboy to include more than 50 vintage play boy pin ups. According to 2K, this will add more realism and adult...ness... to the game.
In my opinion, this will be one of those nice touches to the game. Nothing major (i'm not really as hypnotized by breasts as anyone who's seen any of the stuff i post in the favorite pictures thread would think), but it would add realism and a nice amount of detail to the game world.

But it's nothing compared to the panic and outrage 3 seconds of blue sideboob caused when ME1 came out. Fox did a whole story about it... They even called it a ''Virtual rape machine'' and some other stuff you'd only expect from a high quality news outlet such as Fox news. I think there's a video of the whole thing on Youtube...
Heh... ''Se''Xbox... I see what you did there... Clever... Now please go kill yourself. In a fire. While being raped by a bear.

I've added the video. Now excuse me, i have to go punch someone in the face.... Happens every time i expose myself to the levels of stupidity you can find in your average fox news report.
If your faith in humanity hasnt been completely destroyed yet, and you have some protective gear against stupidity, that video is worth watching.

Re: Media news
Ralph baer, also known as the father of gaming and the man who invented the iconic light gun peripheral and the very first gaming console, has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall Of Fame.
To join the hall of fame, one needs to have invented something that has "a major impact on society, the public welfare,
and the progress of science and the useful arts,". Obviously, Mr. Baer didn't have much trouble qualifying for a position in the hall of fame.
Personally, i think this is a little late. I mean, this is the guy who invented the titan that is today's gaming industry, saved thousands of lives thanks to the simulations the military uses to train it's soldiers, improved the quality of life for millions made a new branch in journalism and much, much more. He should have been accepted into the hall of fame years ago. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest people alive.

Well, he invented the console that would lead to the gaming computer and today's consoles, a new story telling medium and a gigantic industry. I'd say that's a very good reason to get a spot in the hall of fame.

Re: Media news
Valve has taken it's rightful place at the finals on march madness after a very close run in with zynga.
Now, how the hell did a bunch of scammers who make a bunch of crappy, near zero effort games for the masses on facebook manage to defeat several other competent, more honest developers?
Well, the answer is of course the drooling masses on facebook. Zynga put up a voting button on all their popular facebook games, and the facebook players (mostly casual players with no knowledge of the other developers at all) went to the escapist and voted for zynga.
Zynga was however stopped at the semi finals by the gaming giant Valve, which although surprisingly was looking like it was about to lose, managed to get back up to the top with the united support of the majority of(real)gamers that knew about the competition.
Valve and Bioware are now at their rightful place at the finals.
Also, i'd like to point out that it's so incredibly obvious that most of the gigantic wave of people who voted for zynga have no idea what valve, or any of the other developers defeated by Zynga for that matter, is. Valve is the creator of the digital distibution giant Steam, the developers of Counter Strike, the Source engine, the half life series and Team Fortress. And that's only a fraction of all the good stuff they've done.
If you want to vote in the finals, go to Escapistmagazine.com.

Oh, i thought everyone knew.
Zynga is the developer of classic pieces of art (shit) like Farmville, Yoville, Petville, Fishville, Dope wars, Café world and almost every single piece of brilliance (shit) you can find in the facebook games section.
They are also responsible for a crapload of frauds associated with their games. For an example, they offered game points to players who signed up to a certain credit card service. Now, the people who fell for it were idiots, but they're also responsible for other more discreet crap like the swinky toolbar

Nope... The Bioware Bazaar thing pissed me off a little, but i like them because they can make great games.
And the Bazaar thing was ridicilously overblown anyway... The entire fan base went berzerk because EA didn't want to make several competitions to cover the entire western world + russia.
And even if it was worse, the free ME2 DLC they give anyone who buys a new copy of ME2 definitely makes up for it.

Re: Media news
Downloadable Content. It's kind of like plug ins for games. The designers release new items, characters, locations, missions etc post release, and you often have to pay a small sum to get access to them. Bioware, however, decided to implement a ''Cerberus Network'' system. You get a code with each copy of ME2 which you have to bind to your Bioware Network/xbox live account. Almost all significant DLC is free for Cerberus Network members.
If you buy a used copy, you'll have to buy a Cerberus Network acces code off Xbox live or the Bioware Network for a not too bad price.

Wow, this thread should be stickied. :cough: Good topic thingy.
Oh, and I'm a casual gamer. I like games that are moderate paced. You know, you can run and gun or snipe.
To be honest, I'm currently addicted to halo combat evolved for the PC. I just got it for like 10 bucks discounted at the store last week. I played the campaign years ago on my ole xbox, but this has online multiplayer, and tons of maps! Sure, it's not as good as Halo 3, but still lots of fun. Way better than all of the free and open source FPSes I've played. Sorry, open source, but your FPSes suck.
I've found it's so much easier to pretend you're doing work and play a PC game, instead of playing a console game. All I have to do is minimize the window, or hit alt+F4. LOL

Did i mention that it's free? Get the frak over there and play! And don't uninstall the steam client after, the prices are ridicilously low on some games every weekend, often (but not always) in the midweek and sometimes they do GIGANTIC sales, with huge parts of their catalogue for dirt cheap prices. And that's not to mention when they do things like the free MW2 multiplayer weekend/thursday-friday.

Well, here in the EU (outside UK), their standard prices are almost as bad as the brick and mortar game store prices (online game stores are excluded, since they're often really cheap). But their sales make up for it. I mean, seriously? 20 euro for Just Cause AND Batman Arkham Asylum? Frak yes! Or their christmas (or was it thanksgiving...?) sale. God... The christmas sale... You could buy like 10 (bundled) games for the price of one. That's just freaking awesome.

Not to mention you can buy every game they ever made in one box for £50. Seperatly, the price would be way over £100. Pretty good deals.
Sahme is I don't have much time for gaming anymore.

I believe the "Windows" key did the job... That and Alt-Space-n...
On Steam... well... They're cool... but if you're on US I believe x-fire would work better...
Too bad there isn't an equivalent for UNIX systems (counting out mac, cause I think they've their version...)...
But, talking about Linux, I'm downloading Ubuntu 8.04 LTS for my old pc, and uTorrent is winning to Google Chrome! Yay! xD

Said they were better. Still waiting on them to bring out the next in the series though.

On another note, Crysis 2s trailer just came out. Looks pretty good, and at least this one appears to have a better setting.
