Guide to RP Empty Guide to RP

Post by Darkwing 2011-07-29, 02:04

The following is both a compilation of ideas and things presented over time from various people such as Me Naam is M and Kati, with some additions and things by me.

Introduction
Role Playing is a diverse activity in which everyone has their own "style." However, there are still some rules that must be followed and other guidelines and suggestions which are recommended. This Guide to RP should hopefully clear some things up and hopefully present some ideas that will improve your technique and ability to RP and get along with the other players and the stories involved.

Rules
The following must be adhered to with no exceptions.
1. No godmodding or ubering. PERIOD.
2. Read the posts before posting.
3. Never ignore the RPL* (Role Play Leader)
4. Follow any other game specific rules

Guidelines
1. Read the thread... cannot stress this enough.
Start by reading your last post. If this means reading the whole thread because you're new to it, then read the first page and try to read at least the last 5 pages.

2. Don't suddenly jump in.
Ask to be included, instead of suddenly barging in on the story. Post a bio/description of your character and ask if you got green light. A format for the description usually is given. Doing this gives other people the chance to implement you into the story in a logic way or to deny you based on previous experiences.

3. Interaction
If you're interacting with somebody else's character or species, and you're doing something which has a big impact on said subject, say, you're negotiating moving the species to a different planet, make sure that the other approves, either by posting an open outcome and waiting for the other to act, or PMing the other explaining what you want to do and asking if you can.

4. Spelling and grammar. Keep your posts readable.

5. Readability regarding post size.
If you've got large pieces of text, try to put breaks between distinctly different actions to make less of a huge body of text.

6. Keep the size of your posts in moderation.
Try to refrain from making posts smaller than a few sentences or bigger than one complete page.
Sometimes small posts are needed at the start of a thread to learn each other's style, or to prevent breaking guideline 3. Not a big problem, but try to refrain from doing it too much, it uses up a lot of space and patience on the reader's part.

Hints, Tips and Advice
- Story
There is usually a larger story at work which is generally at the discretion of the RPL. If you stray too far from the primary story, the RPL will in most cases nudge you back into the right direction. It is best to accept this guidance or risk running into breaking rule #3.

-Subplots
Subplots are natural and make for much more interesting RP. These subplots add another layer and are usually completely player driven. However, subplots sometimes have a tendency to begin to conflict with the primary plot. If this occurs or looks like it could, contact the RPL and work something out. Subplots ARE more than encouraged and allow for fantastic interactions between multiple characters and allow you to explore your background more thoroughly.

-Characters
Aside from following the game specific guidelines for creating characters, it is recommended that you have a fairly good idea of who your character is and what background they come from. Naturally much will be discovered through gameplay, however having too simple a character can lead to confusion and in a lot of cases, re-writing the character, which effects the story. On that same note, having too developed a character can be restricting and not allow in game growth or exploration. A good idea is to talk with the RPL and see what kind of character will work with the story.
It is also recommended to change things up. Break away from cliches, which are usually gunslingers. Be someone different, be someone unexpected. If you have hard time breaking out of molds, one of the easiest ways is to simply change the gender that you usually play.

-Preview
Preview your post and re-read it before posting. It is a lot nicer to have picked out mistakes and have a polished post before you submit it. On that note, use the browser spell-check system!

-Originality
Even though you may be playing as part of a pre-established universe, find ways to make it unique. Instead of recycling plot points and subjects from the universe you're in, invent something new (believable according to that universe though). On that note, avoid ubering or godmodding as that breaks Rule #1. Be reasonable and work with the story.
