Climate Shift?
This was mentioned on the local news a few days ago:
http://www.kfor.com/news/local/kfor-news-server-weather-more-common-story,0,6349516.story
(watch the video)
We're supposed to have a mild climate here, and now we're getting all of these freak winter storms! (another one is coming in. 8 - 12 inches of snow. Insane for Okies. And we don't have as much road equipment as they do up north)
And in the summer we either get dumped with rain, or no rain at all. This is weird!

Ah, shut up.
It's just really hitting us like never before. Most significantly within this past decade - the present.

Well, this is a large part of my degree. Really, climate sceptics have screwed us up. Mainstream science should have been more vocal. So much shit could hit the fan, it's unbelievable.

HEY! At least you don't live in Nova Scotia. If you lived here, that would give you 100% rights to complaining about weather

Re: Climate Shift?
It's always El Nino. Every year they say, "oh it's an el nino year, they only happen every 7 years" and then every year, they say, "oh, it's an el nino year" so I kinda don't believe in El Nino or El Nina anymore

global warming hmmmm *looks at New Zealand* nope don't see it sorry. however if we have another 35 degree day I am moving Christchurch more south.
Re: Climate Shift?
El Nino is definitely real. However, El Nino events appear to be becoming more frequent and often stronger. It is not clear, but El Nina (anti- El Nino) events seem to be getting less.
Plus it's easy for global warming sceptics to use as an excuse, I suppose.

But on a plus note, britain produces enough off shore wind energy to power the whole of scotland. Doesn't spain have that giant mirror array that heats up the vat of salt or something. also i think it's holland developing alot of wind power aswell.

Re: Climate Shift?
We (Europe and Britain) aren't doing enough though. And this government of ours certainly isn't interested in green investment.
I'm actually very much against the use of wind turbines. They're so unreliable coal backup power stations have to be turned on and off to meet public demand. Turning coal power stations on and off is so inefficient that it would be more environmentally friendly to just rely on coal all the time.

Re: Climate Shift?
TBH we need more nuclear as long as we design and build the plants right, they are very green to run as long as we correctly dispose of the uranium or whatever it is they use in the cores. I personally don't see why people are so against them.
Yes i see your point about wind being unreliable, but what about wave a tidal power?

Oh y'know, the whole if something goes wrong, then a 400-ish mile radius becomes unlivable for the next hundred years or so
Re: Climate Shift?
That doesn't happen if you maintain them properly, plus they should be placed in more rural areas such as scotland, parts of wales and west coast england.

Re: Climate Shift?
Still doesn't deny the fact that if something does go wrong and things always go wrong. It's one thing you can be guaranteed that all humans are good at, we make mistakes, big ones, constantly
Re: Climate Shift?
I support nuclear, because it's the only non-fossil-fuel option that can provide enough energy for us.
Wave-generatable energy is almost uselessly small.
Tidal is a very good way to go, and should be exploited far more. Apart from Bay of Fundy in Canada, Britain has the largest tidal range in the world if I remember correctly. That's why the Severn barrage should have been built!

Re: Climate Shift?
2012 isn't global warming. And yes, global warming does exist and yes al gore just capitalizes on it, but it doesn't change the fact that it exists, but even if all of us used fluorescent lights and ran energy efficient cars, it wouldn't ultimately help all that much. Basically, we need all the factories to shut down before any significant difference is made.
Re: Climate Shift?
Al gore thinks 2012 is going to be caused by global warming. or at least, he tries to tell us similar things. And if every factory did shut down, the difference that occoured would be wiped out naturally in the next 15 or so years, so there's really no point; we have to be ready for anything, not just one thing.

Re: Climate Shift?
Please consult the person with A's and A*'s in chemistry, if we were to cease all co2 production today it would be about 2120-2200 before it was all scrubbed out of the atmosphere, were still putting to many CFC's into the atmosphere they turn into free radicals and destroy ozone more quickly than it can regenerate itself. Simple thing everything we touch we destroy thats the way we are.

Re: Climate Shift?
I tend to agree. I do not support nuclear to a extent but also like the idea of it. it is reliable and also theoretically safe the Chernobyl indecent was largely caused by a inexperienced team and miscommunication. At least that is what the Russian report said.
The energy format I think should be pushed is fusion seriously deuterium is so easy to get and tritium is made from the reaction so you don't really need that much to start with.
Global warming I remain skeptical on the CO2 reason however I do not dismiss it.

Re: Climate Shift?
Global warming is a natural process that is aided by people and pollution. At least, that's how I see it. Quite honestly, I don't even care anymore.
I support nuclear energy. It's way cleaner than oil and fossil fuels and it has a way higher output.

Current Fusion Technology, Consumes more Energy than it Produces, so it's not quite Usable yet.

So much agreed. Not only are there just too many people that it makes me sick, the earth can't sustain this many people. It's well documented and I think nations like India need to just slow down.

Re: Climate Shift?
finding new planets to live on isn't the solution, because we'll still need food and farmland to sustain the population that continues to grow.
sad but true, we gotta reduce it. which city is first?

I have a understanding of how it works, we have not yet quite figured out how to stop the plasma from hitting the reactor walls I think they are trying to get the cryogenic magnets to work better, however magnitisum is not fully understood we need to find the force carrier for it.
Re: Climate Shift?
Is it odd that that made sense to me? This is a sign of me having watched too much science fiction I think.
Oh and good book/movie:

Movie (Based on book): Soylent Green

Re: Climate Shift?
Nope, he explained it in a really simple way. All you need to know most of what he said is basic science. Like, the stuff you learned in 9th grade.

Re: Climate Shift?
I could go insanely complex but its pointless cos it is honestly rather simple anyway.
Re: Climate Shift?
Basically we need to reduce the population in the 3rd world dramatically. therefore less food is needed and reduced emmisions and resources consumed, most western countries such as france, germany, UK and parts of US have a declining population as more and more people are having only 1 child, due to money or time restrictions. Also we really need to redevelope transport and industry to make the cleaner and more sustainable, what about the new nissan leaf being rolled out we all get electric cars but we use non fossil fuels to generate that energy. Why don't we put more funding into that japenese project about sending sattilittes into orbit around the sun and wirelessly sending energy back to base stations here on earth.
I could go on for a very long time about this as i have done extensive research on the subject. A true scientist does not care about social standing, age, gender aslong as you can provide evidence of your claim they'll accept it.

Re: Climate Shift?
Lee unless you can build a dyson cloud then well its useless. also wireless transmission of power is well extremely ineffitiont. work on fusion its both more plausible and easier
Re: Climate Shift?
No, you're too young and have no degree, letalone a PhD. It also takes years of good research in mediocre journals to get a chance to publish in a journal with a decent readership.leewatson1 wrote:I could go on for a very long time about this as i have done extensive research on the subject. (Oh BTW, if they do accept your claim, it's probably only going to be a hypothesis, not even a theory.

Re: Climate Shift?
dude I have studied alot of science heck my sister has a degree in biology and she would never even think about putting forward a paper solely academically. Really to put a idea forward with any kind of weight behind it you need either proof of concept or a masters degree.
Sorry to burst you bubble but your idea is just that an idea. I have ideas on space time but I would never be able to publish them in any place other than this forum really.

Re: Climate Shift?
Nah, he's right, the third world (India, China and all those other guys) have been popping out babies like crazy. The next generation has to learn that one or two kids is enough.
If he meant let's kill a bunch of people (which i don't think is what he meant), then he's a fucking idiot, and that's all.
