The Story
With the natural resources of the planet Earth running low, governments began to destabilize. It was decided globally to dedicate the remaining resources to intergalactic travel and to colonizing our neighboring planet, Mars.
By early 2100, we had developed suitable space travel technology. Though FTL drive was implausible at best, we perfected sublight technology, allowing travel to the planet Mars to only take one month when Mars was at its closest to Earth.
It took nearly forty years to successfully set-up a thriving colony on the harsh planet of Mars. Terraforming parts of it, we were able to make parts of the planet habitable. However, by 2145, a successful colony had begun and we began transporting parts of the civilian population to Mars.
The Mars colony prospered for over 100 years, supplying Earth with the resources needed for it to get back on its feet. The Mars colony however remained fairly distant from Earth and as time passed, regular communication became more and more sparse.
In 2360, Mars declared independence of Earth. Despite not being pleased about this, Earth offered its support as long as regular trade agreements were met and civilians were transported to and from the planets every couple of months.
But things got worse. Feeling the taxing to be too high and seeing that Mars was being treated still as a colony of Earth, Mars confronted the government of Earth about this. An agreement was met, but at the compromise to the people of Earth. Distrust began to run rampant on Earth until eventually a coup occurred and the current government of Earth was overthrown. Intending to reclaim Mars as a colony, the superior battlefleets of Earth were sent to threaten the Martians into obedience to Earth.
Despite being slightly set back in technological resources, Mars had a surprise for the Earth fleet when it showed up unannounced. The Martians had a fully functional space navy, though slightly less advanced in technology and skill, the Martians had numbers on their side.
Decimating the Earth fleet, war was announced as Earth intends to conquer Mars, whether the Martians like it or not.
