Re: Philosophers corner
The real reason the world is messed up is because of the things that inhabit it, people. People are, by nature, selfish. And it's this selfishness that has lead to a pretty big chunk of the world's problems.
There's not really a way to fix this except through forcing evolution down a path that would change human nature... And that's not going to happen, ever.

Re: Philosophers corner
well, basically the concept of humans being selfish (ie sinful) and the fact that there is no solution for it through ourselves.
Re: Philosophers corner
Except in the Christian view humans, by nature, are actually NOT selfish and greedy.

Re: Philosophers corner
well, my version says we are. think about this, it is said sin entered the world after Adam ate the fruit. However, Adama knew not to eat from the fruit beforehand anyways, so even contemplating eating it is in fact a sin if you think about it, because he was thinking about essentially breaking on of God's rules and this would have been based on greed and selfishness because he wanted the power of God essentially.
Re: Philosophers corner
Adama doesn't eat fruit, he only eats RAW CYLON MEAT, that's how he keeps his awesomeness.
...Sorry, had to do it.

heh, BSG is also a very Christian show, much more than anything mainstream that I've ever seen
Re: Philosophers corner
Pretty big BSG spoiler below
- Spoiler:
Not neccesarily... You never knew wether it was the colonial pantheon or the cylon god that made all that stuff happen. It was just some kind of divine power.

DW, you are some fragment of Calvinism, I think. So not mainstream. However, I must ask whether you believe the Garden of Eden story is true or just a metaphor?

Re: Philosophers corner
little of both really. and yes, I'm not quite reformist, not quite calvinist, not quite baptists, but sort of a mix of them all See Calvinism in its purist form does have its own flaws right because it can come down very strict on stuff that doesn't need to be that strict. It's a bizarre mix, but unlike most of the other denominations of Christianity which are now more based on getting numbers and doing therapy sessions and not really teaching that God is angry with us, my denomination is based on the Bible! (Who would have thought, a denomination of Christianity based on the Bible!)

I think I was 8 when I last went to Church. And I guess technically the Presbyterians are closest to my beliefs, except they have infant baptism

So is it your dad who has broken away from the Presbyterians, then?

Dad was originally Baptist. We never went to the Presbyterians, but we know the Pastor of one Church plus research. Sadly, in Nova Scotia, there isn't much for choice around here. It's Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholic, Presbyterian and Nazarene
Re: Philosophers corner
its not required. im Presbyterian, and i never got baptized.Darkwing wrote:I think I was 8 when I last went to Church. And I guess technically the Presbyterians are closest to my beliefs, except they have infant baptism

I've grown up Methodist but have created my own views along the way.
My belief basically put is that God created the universe through science, and manipulates it if He needs to by the rules of science.

I used to think like that but now I realize that however God may have done it, it's just that he created everything that matters and science doesn't matter. What's the point of faith if science is there just so you can comfort yourself? You either believe or you don't, science notwithstanding. Plus, why would he need to abide by the rules of science? He exists completely independently of nature.
According to the faith anyways. I'm not really Christian anymore so I don't need to agonize over those little things.

If KF is right, maybe the laws of science are His laws? Never considered that?

Re: Philosophers corner
Obviously because he created science. But he sure doesn't abide by them all the time. God does whatever he wants, by or not by the laws of science.

Re: Philosophers corner
ok, I'm starting to get confused, so let's pick an easy example, it being time. God invented time and we have to abide by the rules of time (at least so far, no idea if time travel is possible or whatnot). God doesn't exactly follow the rules of time as he exists outside of time. He does in a manner of speaking also exist within time as well, but the passage of time means nothing to him as it in effect doesn't exist for him. At least that's the impression you get from the Bible

life is like a dessert when you make a bad decision the taste is bad but when you make a good decision the taste is better and make to nice it will be horrible due to too much attacking your taste buds.

in islam we believe that god is separate from anything that limits humans including our concept of time, to him the concept is incomprehensible to us because we are simply human, so basically this impression from the bible is similar to what we believe. As for the story of Adam and the fruit from earlier on I don't know about the biblical version but in the qur'an it is said that satan whispered to Adam and Eve to eat from the tree after god warned them not to, when they succumbed to his whispering, the grew private parts and god found out what they had done and cast them on earth so that only the worthy among them would make it back to heaven... well thats my understanding but im no sheikh so..

Re: Philosophers corner
well, here's what happened, Satan basically poised the question to Eve "what's God holding back from you" soe she ate from the fruit (due note that this is not the cause of Sin, important theological point right there) she then goes to Adam sayin "yo homey, dis da best damned fruit eva!" so Adam eats it and then everything goes to hell...literally
