so? these are public programs and it might be a good guide for users wanting software but don't know of their free counterparts. just because you know abou them doesn't mean the rest of the world does

paint.net - a free image editor that allows plugins , originally this was created as an update for MS PAINT but microsoft never used it so this warped into a very good image editor , a free alternative to Photoshop .

notepad++ - this is the best editor , it can replace notepad and supports all the scripting languages ( as3 , php ,c++,ect.) , this program works on all OS including mac and linux , and the source code is available on the website

VLC - the best player on the web , it can play almost all video and audio formats and this player never needs any codecs , plus this player even repairs damaged files and works on all OS even Unbuntu what more do you want from it , i know you want conversion because you need your files in one format , well i think that this program can do it , i don`t care it just plays all.

Paint.net is ok. GIMP is better.

Notepad++ is awesome!

VLC rocks! But, it's harder for inexperienced users to learn how to use it.

Firefox, yeah, we all know that one.

Adblock plus is a must have addon. But, I suggest getting the element hiding helper as well.

noscript is wonderful for security, but it can become a pain.

FDM is cool. Never used it, but the concept looks useful.

Thunderbird is the best email client EVER!

Portable apps....

Excellent for when you're in school.

DOSbox... I've used that before.

Not bad. It worked. That's all I can say.

1 Adblock Plus - this plugin is a gift from god , before i had this installed on my firefox , i was really bothered by all those nasty adds but whit this little fellow that is a thing of the past .LINK

FDM(free download manager) - well now that i am done whit firefox plugins lets share one of the best download managers , this one can download from youtube whit on or two clicks and converts you downloaded video or music to any format , this program integrates himself in firefox and gives you a download menu where you can download the hole website whit his own html spider , did i say that it works on most OS and for the ones that won`t work the source code is there and you can compile yourself .

Thunderbird - Firefox little sister a mail client and much more just as firefox this has tons of plugins and security is a top asset , i use this in combination whit Gmail ( free mail from google) because thunderbird was customized for gmail but it works just as well whit other webmails .

Portable apps - didn`t you ever wish to be able to have your programs on a flash drive well whit this you can put any program on you portable device and all the files saved are there , this leaves no trace in the pc , you can have your firefox whit all you plugins installed anywhere whit you , at school , office and home , this is just like a OS you your flash , and it comes in 3 sizes :
-standard ( a small version to put any program on you portable device )
-light suite ( a bigger version whit tons of programs just waiting to be copied )

Alternatives to Adobe Programs

Here are a few Adobe Programs and it's alternatives:
1st - Adobe Photoshop = Paint.NET/GIMP : Everyone knows the power of Photoshop, but also knows it's price... On Adobe Website, it says that the software cost 699$ plus shipment if you order the CD/DVD. Paint.NET is a free software with a good pack of tools that imitate several Photoshop tools. It can work with layers and other tools tipical of far mor tecnical programs. A good alternative to Paint.NET might be GIMP, but it requires a bit of messing around if you're used to photoshop. Both programs are free.

Alternatives to 3d animation programs:

Blender = Great 3d software, free to download and with its own open-source game engine, written in C++.

Anim8tor = I have never used anim8tor, but from what I've heard it's pretty good.

I can recommend Inkscape for basic stuff.

I just saw this on gizmo. I haven't tried it, but it looks good. It's a free version of something called Xara, an alternative to adobe illustrator. At the moment they're offering free the basic version to anyone going via gizmo.
