And on global warming: It was about 1 or 2 degrees warmer during the Middle Ages, and that has nothing to do with greenhouse gases. It was followed by a cooling period. Later during 1900-1940, industrialization and other such things raised the atmospheric temperature again, but a cooling period followed afterward, causing glaciers to advance and frost to damage crops. Only recently (after 1975 or so) has the global atmospheric temperature risen again. Global warming is not really a viable cause for concern, the atmosphere is in a constant state of flux, warming and cooling. Global warming is really nothing to be afraid of; just a political scare.

You know, on all of my time in life and on the net, I have never actually met somebody who is a global warming scepticist and isn't American.
Anyway, let's not go there.

Of course it's happening. But there's no cause of concern about it. The world is heating up, and I pose the question: so what? It's happened many times before and it's happening now. So what?

In Britain, sceptic is spelt with a 'c'.
But do you deny that events such as El Nino and desertification in the sahel are happening at an alarming rate?

Re: Doomsday Poll
Of course not. I don't deny anything as long as the evidence points to it. Global warming is a different matter entirely, as you can't exactly tell whether or not it's natural or it's caused by greenhouse gas emissions.
On desertification, it's happening because of overgrazing, apparently.

to all of you who believe in a fast and all-destructive Armageddon: dude. even the existence of Santa Clause is more likely. although it has been proved many times over that he's just a ripoff.

I bet China and India can do more than America and Europe combined! Hence why the US did not sign the Kyoto Protocol, among other reasons.

Well over here, almost everyone agrees t's happening. Including the conservatives. Maybe because we have no oil barons to help change our mind.
Alkanosis wrote:I bet China and India can do more than America and Europe combined! Hence why the US did not sign the Kyoto Protocol, among other reasons.
WTH? That's bollocks! Saying "We won't sign because they're outdoing us" is'nt a reason! Why not see who could launch the most nukes into the sky in one go instead?
But before you feel offended Alka, it's not you personally that I'm questioning, just your beliefs

Our former President Bush declined to sign the Kyoto Protocol because, apparently, developing nations like China and India are exempt from the restrictions imposed by the document. It would also be detrimental to our already declining economy.
Shemuel wrote:oil barons
Meh. Maybe. And I'm not saying that global warming isn't happening. You would have to be a nearly fundamentalist conservative to believe that it isn't happening. The debatable bit is whether or not the rising temperatures are a direct cause of human actions or not. Historically, this does not seem to be the case. Large amounts of industry occurred in the first half of the 20th century, yet it was followed by a cooling period. The atmospheric temperature has been rising since 1975, but it being due to human activity is questionable.
Shemuel wrote:Offended, beliefs, bleh
I don't really care what people think of me over the internet, really. But it's good that you just don't like my beliefs, after all, what European would?

Re: Doomsday Poll
Sure, the chinese and indians are messing up the world more than the US and europe but that's no reason to say no to the protocols, USA is still having a big effect on global warming(mostly because most people cant get themselves out of their cars and have that 5 minute walk to that store or whatever). Like shem said, we dont have all those oil companys trying to make their effect on the world look minimal (take the iraq war for example, they invaded iraq for oil but made everyone think they're doing it for the iraqi people). But that was bush and the republicans, obama and the democrats are probably alot better.

Umm... most of the poor decisions were made by Congress. Which is dominated by liberals. The thing is, the president doesn't authorize the spending of money, Congress does. You can't blame the president and the GOP for poor decisions; it's the fault of the entire bureaucracy.
And you seem to be of the though that the world is black and white. In truth, both the Republicans and Democrats and politics in general just suck.
On the Kyoto Protocol... we didn't sign because developing countries such as China and India are exempt from the conditions on the Protocol, despite the fact that they signed it. They can put out as much CO2 as they want but America is made out to be the antagonist? Sorry, not interested.
