SURE, the laser today is still not good enough[due to too much energy use, slow recharge etc]...
So now to conquer the world, all i have to do is this:
Go to the future, buy cheap[BUT POWERUL TODAY] lasers, go back to earth, recruit allies, TAKE OVER THE WORLD!
anyways if the human race still lives on for centuries to come, our tech will be much better then today.
but today has lots of new tech!
