School
In three and one half hours I begin school for the year with my first college class. Whats everyone taking this semester? I'm taking Algebra 3 (the last algebra in my high schools regiment) and Physics, Spanish 1, English 3 (last regular English), American history, and my college college class - Introduction to java programming.

Re: School
Oh dear, the academic system in the USA is so confusing.
So you're in your penultimate year of school?
You have modular choices for subjects, or are they generally set?
Java Programming - is that the equivalent of a university module?
What do colleges/universities take into consideration for admission?

Re: School
Oh yes, and you don't do one subject in depth, you do several subjects with one main one. Arrrgh!

Re: School
Yeah, here in Canada at least we generally choose a minimum of one major and one minor in university, plus electives of course. My major in this case is psych and I haven't picked a minor yet, will most likely be english though

I only had 2 set classes i had to take. These are one English credit (I'm taking the regular English class this semester), and one history credit (must be American History this year)
I have to choose 4 more classes with the option of 2 more.
Most colleges expect you to have more math and science than my school requires so for the first two i selected Algebra 3 (the highest Algebra module) and Physics (one of the three higher sciences offered at my school)
I had 2 open slots left
I selected Spanish 1 because any of the colleges im interested in require 2 credits of a foreign language (2 full years or 4 semesters)
I have 1 slot left
I have taken all of the computer science offered at my school so i had to go to one of the universities for dual credit (HS and College credit) Introduction to Java Programming is the lowest CS class offered at the College. It is the introductory course and it is a one semester course.
Does this help?

In the US a student typically chooses one major focus and one minor focus (sometimes 2 years and many times 4). A student may select no minor (typically a 3 year program). They may also select two majors (usually 5 years)

Re: School
Are you just starting Spanish DW? Seems kind of off, but you gotta start sometime dont ya?
But I'm with ya leach, I started today too.
Buying books is...it's just so traumatizing. Also, in my school at least, we have to do a LOT of walking. I may even get a tan from being outside so long.
The ones I applied to basically looked at standardized test scores, grade point average, and class rank.

Re: School
Class rank? I swear the American system is so complicated and obtuse just to weed out those confused by the system itself. If I were an American, I'd end up a hillbilly with a shotgun.
Cheers guys for explaining. I looked it up as well, and have a vague idea now. To start with, I never realised GPA was letters converted into numbers.
mmm...women's beach volleyball...

Remember, French is the second language in Canada so it's only English and French that's taught in Primary and Secondary school, not spanish. I had the option of either doing more french, doing german or latin or of course spanish. I took Spanish.

Take more French for an easy grade

Re: School
French is apparently harder as you actually have to speak it in class instead of english and all that. Spanish however is apparently quite easy and you just talk english and just study the language and shit like that
Re: School
Spanish may seem easier because you've already learned french. The third language is easier to learn than the second. Still, only a matter of time until Spanish is our primary language.

Only if the languages are somewhat related. For example, even if you've learned all of English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc., it's still gonna be amazingly difficult to learn Eastern languages. It's what the people who want to join the CIA have to go through. To certain languages that have little to no relation to English, like Arabic and Chinese, it's not easy whatsoever.

Re: School
I have no fucking idea what I'm taking because schedules are handed out on the first day of school (the day after American labor day for me) and they're still in the process of laying off teachers so nobody has any idea right now if the classes they picked are the classes that they're actually gonna take.
