Flash Trek Empty Flash Trek

Post by Darkwing 2011-05-27, 16:23

Dunno why, maybe the weather, but I suddenly felt nostalgic, felt like going back and reviewing Flash Trek a little. It's kinda weird really because FT was the rage of internet flash games and for some reason seemed to die when BM3 died. I mean there's been people attempt to make the plethora of bad mods known as sequels but they don't get much attention.
It's just weird because there used to be so much interest. I actually just looked up Broken Mirror 3 on Google (never did that before). I never knew there was a wiki questions thread about the game Razz
But it is hard to believe, it's been 2 years since BM3 came to a halt and like I said, maybe it's the weather, but I got this strange urge to try and make an FT game again, except the same problem still exists and it's that I don't have Flash and probably by the time I do, I'll be in university with no time to make anything.

That happened to me about a week ago when the newbies posted in the archives section(Where did these newbies go, anyway? they come for 2 days and never come back? NOT GOOD!)and i saw all the old FT stuff. I even played a game of the original BM and of When Universes Collide. It would be pretty sweet if you could work on BM3 again, not to mention the activity boost that will definitely happen. Also, if there's a backup/source out there, you wouldn't have to re-start it, you could modify a few things and continue from where you left off all those years ago...

@Vedic, oh yeah, I actually have a design style in mind for everything, but it would get a major graphical overhaul.

@Shem I don't think so yet, or at least nothing as complex as a BM game.

Also, I think I'd really toy with the notion of coding this game from scratch, perhaps expand upon ideas from Flash Trek Galaxies

See, the thing I would do would be different than everyone else. In retrospect, what everyone does when they mod or make a flash trek game is they go for adding more ships, more stuff. I think this time round, I'd go for less, but done well. For instance, limiting the player to only a couple types of ships so that you could have things like properly firing weapons that don't just come from the center, upgrades to your ship, things of that nature.

I think it would be better to have only a few ships that were well done with things like proper firing arcs, maybe even the option for a Bridge Commander-esque style where you can control your ship from the "bridge" so your view is actually out of a viewscreen

It would, but I also don't think it would be as hard as it seems as long as the ships were the right size. See that's why you'd limit it to only a few ships, simply because the weapons don't all line up

As long as you get the hype up on the interwebs, we'll get a load of new people here. But it's good to hear that you're thinking about starting it up again. You could always screw college payments, and get flash, because its not like you'll be paying them off for a decade anyway.

Yeah, I guess it shows people still want to see new along the lines of Flash Trek, it's just nobody is doing new!

Thing is, even if I did have access to Flash now, it would still take years to make a game like this, especially with me starting university in the fall. Of course I do intend to buy an academic version of Production Suite (CS5) once I have a student ID, but that may not be until the fall
