Higher Education
Right Lee, I understand that you are unsure of the uni, but sure of the course. Where have you applied to and from whom have you received offers?

Re: Higher Education
At least you do know the courses you want. In my opinion, it's much harder to find out what you want to do rather than find a uni to meet your needs/wants
Re: Higher Education
It is true. Actually, I'll broaden the topic to all who are in, or nearing, higher education.

Re: Higher Education
Yeah, that's a good idea. I mean even with me, I've gone 2 years now without being in post-secondary, however all that time I thought I was gonna do film but never really sure and instead ended up on Psych
Re: Higher Education
Well i'm resitting my As year at the next academic year then go on to do A2 then uni, i've recieved a letter of staffordshire uni asking me to attend an open day, i was also thinking of applying to northumbria as i can live at home then. Apart from that no others apart from newcastle but i wont get in there.

Re: Higher Education
How did your AS levels go?
I really would advise you not live at home, otherwise you don't get the uni experience.
1) More fun
2) More interaction with people
3) Halls of residence are a stepping stone to living alone (which I presume you want to do sometime)
4) Usually, you can take full advantage of resources available (e.g. libraries, student unions)
5) Less journey time to lectures (believe me, useful when they are early morning lectures, i.e. before 11am)
Of course, it also depends what bang you can get for your buck - what the best course that you can still get onto is. If you are falling back to the lesser unis, then you have to consider whether getting practical experience in a job is better.
DW, glad to hear you're concrete on your decision - I know you are because you've put your money where your mouth is.
What are you hoping to do with your course after leaving uni?

Re: Higher Education
Not sure, gonna use Uni to find out. Probably some form of counselling, maybe get a doctorate and actually become a doctor of Psych, but I dunno yet.
Also on the topic of living at home, Shem has a point, yet uni is expensive and living at home saves you a lot of uneccessary costs that living on res or in an appartment would have and when you're pumping out 10 grand a year, anywhere you can save a nickel, you do it

Re: Higher Education
Same here, but getting a loan means you have to pay it back with interest. Say goodbye to 20 years of life

Re: Higher Education
It's my personal view that uni life is half of the whole point of going. yes, you become more employable (so long as you choose a decent course and decent uni), but it can be a huge eyeopener. I'm not the same person who left home in September.
I can't be sure, but are you going to Vancouver now, Chris?

Re: Higher Education
Nope, going to the university that is a 10 minute walk away from home. As you can imagine for me, I'm just going for the knowledge and those two shiny letters at the end of it all so I can make more money than my parents did.
Re: Higher Education
Ah, so you're not going for the life lessons and social skills that you will someday need. Ah well, your loss, you know what you want.

Re: Higher Education
At the cost of 10grand per year before interest, I'm content to skimp on social skills
Re: Higher Education
Fair enough. Personally (especially as it isn't my money!) I can't put a value on them.

Re: Higher Education
I'm still 2 years from being anywhere near a university, but once I'm there, it's going to be a Canadian or UK one. I'm thinking university of British Columbia, but I dunno if I'll even get in there.
I have a friend who wants to go to Canada too, and we've been talking about going to BC university. Gonna go the computer science course, since I want to become a programmer. Biggest problem so far is the financing, but the gov here is pretty generous, they'll probably give us a good loan. Gonna have to talk to our school's advisor on this stuff first though, to be sure we can get a loan that big.

I might just end up going to the UK instead though. I don't know 100% yet. I'd rather go to Canada, but the UK is a shitload easier.

Penn State. It's where I am and it's consistently one of the top 3 party schools every year, dubious honor though it may be.

Re: Higher Education
I'm going to University of Nebraska Kearney, 'cuz I got a little more than $5000 in scholarship money to go there, and I'll major in chemistry. At least, until I change majors.
Where are you at right now Shem?

Re: Higher Education
Doing chemistry? That's a great degree to do, at least here. A rather employable degree.
I'm currently at Aberystwyth. Unfortunately it's still in Wales, but I see relatively few Welsh people as it's full of English. I went there for the course - it's in the top ten in Britain for Physical Geography.

That's cool! I got a ~2000 dollar scholarship for year 1 plus an additional 1200 for the other three years
Re: Higher Education
Yeah, scholarships are nice.
Philly, I'm sure you wouldn't have your uni any other way.
And Thingeh, I have the feeling you'll one day be employing us regardless of your next step

Yep, I can be Thingy's shrink of his slaves, helping to keep them brainwashed into believing their lives are worth something for the 15 cents a week Thingy will pay them
Re: Higher Education
15 cents?! You'll be lucky if you get more than cornstarch and water with some E2156 sweetener for desert once a month.

Re: Higher Education
I sell my own music beats every now and then. I get around £30 each time selling them at about £2-5. (This is just around my local area)
Re: Higher Education
That's pretty cool. I don't sell anything. In fact, I don't even sell stuff at the theatre anymore, I'm just in positions now where I simply work and do my own thing for the most part
Re: Higher Education
Holy smokes, it seemes so crazy to think about college, (although i long for the day) but im starting some classes as an 11th grade student at a local college in just 3 months. In the future i look forward to going to a college somewhere (i have wanted to go to Washington state for a while but i may start looking towards the east coast more.)
