Well, some are like those guys you said DW, but many are actual teens who only have it as a hobby... I know this guy, who has hacker skills, and he has a great social life, and in the background works those skills...

At best, the entire operation will get one low ranked IT guy at the department of information slightly, and i emphasize slightly, irritated. Seriously, i doubt president mubarak, or anyone who actually matters in the slightest in the Egyptian government, even knows what the hell 4chan, or an internet forum for that matter, is. I doubt anyone except a couple hundred or thousand in Egypt know/care about anonymous (keep in mind that we're 80 million).

You know, this is like when your kitten like very, very lightly paws at you and thinks it's a great hero of the kitty revolution. But you just go ''awww, aren't you a big, strong lion?'' and pet it.

I mean, young adults and full grown men are out on the streets fighting alongside (and sometimes without)the military using sticks, stones, kitchen knifes and whatever else they've managed to scrape together to defend their homes and neighborhoods, sometimes even the cultural heritage of a civilization older than Christianity by more than 1,100 years. There's entire units of police who risk torture, death or imprisonment if this revolution fails, all because they refused to kill their own people in cold blood with live ammunition and steel batons when the government told them to do so. And the same goes for many of the protesters, risking their own lives and their own basic human rights to overthrow a dictatorship. And Al Baradei, one of the leaders of the revolution? He could be killed by an ''extremist'' (government agent) any time, yet he stays in one of the most dangerous places in the world right now despite the fact that he can just go ''OK, screw this shit, I'm going home to Vienna''.

And these morons think, in all seriousness, that taking down a website absolutely no one uses for at most a couple of hours matters? That their ''list of demands'' is even going to be heard by anyone? Even a very low level employee in any department, other than the guy in charge of IT and whoever is tasked with fixing this? Self important pricks. I agree with DW, they should just get their dicks out of their craniums and grow up. Or just jump en masse from a very high building. The latter is preferable.

Well, in the western world it would work more effectively because so much is run with our computer systems and networks and whatnot, so crashing those would be a pretty big inconvenience here. In Egypt, probably not so much.

@Philly: Everyone wants attention, so I'll have to disagree with you on that. I mean they're more than just hackers, they're publicized ones that have almost weird sort of myth about them too. They definitely want attention in that whiny kid who can't have what he wants sort of way.

Not in this case. They just crashed the public information page. Government communications and the communications of organizations supporting the government haven't been affected. And no one really reads the government info page in a situation like this anyway, even in the west. So they had absolutely no effect on anything whatsoever.

They could have gone out and protested at the Egyptian embassy. That would have had some effect at least.

But they still got attention here because it was published in the news. So still a win for them.
