Should forums be anonymous?

OK so i was reading on a forum earlier about some guy campaigning for all websites such as this to be 100% anonymous, now i know some of our members here are anon but half of us half each other on FB we know other stuff like where we live our real names etc.. so what do you think about forums being anon? personally i think it's not a problem either way i have 3 members from here on facebook and i have no reason to regret it.

the whole problem is in the end, despite the fact that this is our little corner of the internet, its still a PUBLIC corner. Lemme tell you a story about why i had a problem with people giving too much info, and this is a true story.

A teacher at my school likes to post videos of himself talking about various subjects on Youtube, which is okay, but every single detail about his life is on his youtube and facebook accounts from his addrss to his kid's birhtdays. One day he posted a vid, in which he behaved quite serious but most students found hilarious, including me, A friend of mine, goes and links it to facebook, and other students start commenting on it.

This is facebook, where allot of people feel anonymous, or at the very least "the teacher cant find out what we said about him", But he did, guess why? Because he was "friends" with the guy who posted the link.

In the end, 5 students from various grades were suspended, and one them was in Year 12 and she was forbidden to go to her formal. You might thinks that's harsh but you wouldn't you see what she wrote.

This all happened because the teacher could not handle what was being said about HIS video, but let everyone know that is was HIS.

I know its not very relevent, but it does make me think twice about anonymity

In the end though, I reckon it should still be the choice of the person.

I dont think it should be anon however if you are on the internet be careful how you do things my rules are.

Never post your full name online in any situation.
Never post your birthdate if people could easily find out your full name
Never post your street or suburb online
If you have not met them in person or do not trust them restrict information they can see on facebook or other sites.

Those are my basic rules.

well Deoran, a few people like that shouldnt make a lot of sites anonymous.

if someone wants to ruin their life by posting naked pictures of themselves, or being a complete douche to a teacher who (probably) didnt deserve it, i feel no sympathy for them. whether they can't get a job or they get suspended from school, its their own damn fault.

That and with a simple e-mail address, you can pretty much find out anything about anybody, so anonymity is really irrelevant.

hahaha actually none of you know my real name :p this is the beauty of my name no one can figure it out. oh by the way in new zealand you would need a fair amount of paperwork to find anyone's birth records.

Also I happen to know you guys rather well and I really doubt anyone has the time or effort to attempt to find me irl

oh no the teacher was fine cause there wasn't any explicit content, it was just the way he acted, , it was students that got suspended

if i remember correctly someone here actually found... not my address but my city (before i put in my personal info) by tracking my IP after i challenged someone to do it... I think it was DJ

well the thing is now everyone is on the internet you really do have to put alot of info online in the same place before it gets risky most people are not stalkers or rapists or anything like that but you need to be careful anyway.

@deoran: IP addresses can EASILY find your location, but it gives nothing else unless you actually contact the ISP(i think). if i was mod, i could find out the region where all of you live(unless you use a proxy) just by a tool the forum has.

I never send them an e-mail, I been able to find people and their locations among other things simply by searching up the e-mail address and cross-referencing it with others.

And it's not hard to stalk me, I don't exactly go anywhere. If I'm not in my bedroom, I'm in the kitchen or bathroom and if I'm not there, I'm at work
