We don't have many holidays in the UK, and when we do there usually a bank holiday, so all the shop but a few will be closed.

well, everything over time has become market driven, but no, that's not it's original purpose here. It sort of doubles as a harvest kind of holiday too, so it's actually in some ways more about the harvest and giving thanks for the harvest
