It's the same old 'grass is greener on the other side' chestnut, I think.
I wouldn't chose windows over linux if I had to pay for it, but Windows 6.1 is fine - I've had no problems with it at all.
And there's always the "dude, wtf is lidux? Get your priorities right!"

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
All are good OS, and all have their problems... With windows 7 I've always problem finding my Wireless Drivers... So much that I saved the entire Windows.old folder of Vista so I can have all my pc drivers without seaching...
In Linux, they don't even exist...
In Linux I could keep my pc fresh and running for almost unlimited time... But sometimes I had problem with repositories and had to make a few tweaks... Sometimes, Windows Media Player just forgets the songs I had in my partition D of my hdd...
All have problems... The point is: Choose the one were you can do your work the faster you can and spending as less money you can...

WTF? no wireless drivers in linux? that's weird, mine works out of the box. Hell, even my tablet worked out of the box in 'nix, which i can't say for 'dows.

For my Wireless Card there weren't last time I tried it...
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
I had a far weaker wireless connection with Ubuntu. It's just because the driver manufacturers don't make it easy for linux.

That's true. Nothing supports Linux, and Linux just has to reverse-engineer almost everything. That being said, my wireless connection with Ubuntu is Much, much better.

Yup... Linux developers have always to make drivers from scratch, without help of the companies...

Good analogy...
But yeah... I started making software oriented programs (more oriented to Windows Market) a few months ago, and now we're starting with Web Languages... I can't imagine how it will be when we arrive to hardware oriented programing...
Those guys are pretty much what keeps the Open Source community alive... or Linux would have been left behind...

Right... we forgot how alka does likes to opose people xD
Anyway... Linux is both loosing and winning... Loosing with the support from major companies, and winning with the growing support of the increasing amount of "Tech Nerds" who use it...
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Not to mention it's gaining ground on the portables market. Mac will not fill that hole, and Microsoft cannot. Leaves Linux.

I've never used Linux. I'm just sick of the elitist Linux snobs proclaiming it's the best thing since sliced bread. And I have an irrational hatred of Macs, so that leaves the mainstream choice.

I don't say Linux is "the best thing since sliced bread"... That's just being a dorky nerd... Linux is a good OS... so is Windows and Mac OS... They all make their function well...

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
I think each OS is suited for a particular type of person. For instance, my Mac works beautifully for me, I have no issues with it, runs smooth and clean. I finally installed an anti-virus on it after having it on the net for a year, did a scan and there were no viruses or anything on it, so that's a plus.
Windows is OK for a general PC, it does excel in some places where other OSs don't (games being the big one people like). I've never used Linux so I have no place to say. But I'd like to remain open to the idea that each OS is just as good as the other, depending on what your intentions are for an OS

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Yeah, Linux is more of an OS for people who want it THEIR way, with capitals. Mac is for people who want it the smooth and exclusive way, and windows is for people who just want it.

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Yeah... When I wanted the pc the way I wanted, I used Ubuntu... But I somehow reduced the pc from something that mirrors me to a work and fun tool...
Since that day I've been using Windows 7 in my laptop... But everytime I wanna show of all of my skills (one of those days were I take out my bike outside and bring my guitar to light) I like always to show what does the word "Linux" means...
People get like: "How can he do things so opposed?" Easy answers, don't you think?

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
What? Confuse as hell? I do find it a bit confusing, but it was because I just read one in each three lines...
But Linux isn't confusing... It's just a system that can do both what we need and what we want... While Mac OS and Windows only allow us to do what we need to do with the OS... Linux allow us to do what we want with it... and that's the fuzzy part...

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Well, the fuzzy part in Linux is where the impossible part in mac and windows is. And people often stumble upon these parts unwittingly.

Stumble upon them, and knowing most pc users nowadays are kids and teens thinking they "know it all" start to twiking it and then the problems start to rise up...

Exactly. And then they get back at the support forums, only to find out that nobody has been as stupid as them before, and then they start whining.

And also that they are used to support lines like in MS or Apple, and sometimes even DEMAND they help them or they could "Stop using Linux"...
Response: "We don't care... we don't get money with *name the distro*, so go away... And return to yuor windows sandbox "

How many topics have we had like this? LOL
For me:
Windows = Games and Adobe products (Flash sucks in linux BTW)
Linux = Everything else

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
The Adobe products (especially the newer ones) work really smoothly on Macs. I think Adobe and Mac have some business ties though so that could explain it

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
So, without flash... how will they even play websites like Youtube and stuff like that?
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
HTML5 is coming and rising fast.
The issue with flash is that, well... It sucks hairy lasagne balls, as far as code is concerned. It has even more security risks than IE8, eats whole cpus for breakfast, and in general it's spaghetti coding. Besides that, it's very core is limiting any attempt to making it compatible with new OSes and PC architectures that will continue to develop fast, so it will die out in the end. Jobs is just being very forward about it.

Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
The flash abandonment is a bad move though. For video, yes, ditch flash. There's alternatives. For those awesome interactive apps and games...... :echo:... :echo:.... No one steps up to the plate.
When that comes around, even I'll say to hell with flash.

Yes, but Mac is from Apple. but Adobe is refusing to let Apple put flash on its Iphones, and Ipods. Looks like a strike to me.
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
....i like flash. You're not supposed to build entire sites with it, it's an add-on type of app. That and I won't be able to code HTML5
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Apple doesn't need Adobes permission to play flash on their products.

well... HTML isn't exactly a programing language... It's a Mark Up Language... It gives the "main shape" of a website... I guess HTML5 will have support to put vids in formats like avi and wmv... while the others had only support for swf... at best...
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
yes, but can HTML5 make games? Does it have a visual interface like flash?
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
Darkwing wrote:yes, but can HTML5 make games? Does it have a visual interface like flash?
Well... Probably it wont... But again... HTML5 will open new doors and close old ones... Maybe there will be a way of making games similar to flash...
Re: Linux vs. Windows or Mac
well, until it can do all of what flash can and more, I'm not buying into it, or liking it. Flash is a lot more comprehensive then people give it credit for, it's mostly because that use it, don't use it well
