73 swine flu cases confirmed
The new strain of the deadly swine flu has been spreading very fast, 73 cases have been confirmed and hundreds others are feared. it's epicentre is in mexico, but like i said it's spreading fast and has hit europe and north america. The European Union has called on people only to go to the infected countrys if absolutely neccesary. President obama said on monday that it's a ''case for concern and requires a heightened state of alert'' but it is not a ''cause for alarm''.
The symptoms are similar to the common flu. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
If you get any of those symptoms, get to a hospital. Also, if you're in one of the infected countrys, i reccomend you not to go outside except if you REALLY need it. Also, remember, you MUST wash your hands before eating, touching your mouth or anything like that. WHO has reported that it has a pandemic potential, so make sure to stay protected.
If you dont know what a pandemic is, it's disease spread over a big georgraphical area. a pandemic killed 1 million people in 1968 and 100 milion in 1918.
and remember,it might take months to get a vaccine, so make sure you stay protected and in case of flu symptoms, get to a hospital ASAP.

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
Although, this might also be like the Fort Dix pandemic of 1976, where an outbreak of swine flu killed a 19-year old private and infected hundreds of soldiers. In response to this crisis, Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a nationwide vaccination project at the cost of $135 million (500 million after inflation). Within weeks, there were hundreds of reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing neurological disorder that can be caused by the vaccine. 30 people died. The epidemic failed to materialize.
Although the virus can be arguably different, we must remember not to overreact, and to be serious and calm about this situation.
Please don't look like these fools:

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
YEah, I've heard about this swine flu.
When it first started, I had set in my head: "STAY AWAY FROM THE MEXICANS"
(Because it started in Mexico)
But since it's spread to the white people, I guess I might as well go back to associating with Mexicans.

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
well, here's my opinion of it, it's like all the other "epidemics". like, whatever happened to the avian bird flu scare, or the sars scare, to me, this is the same. on another note, two people here are infected, they go to a private school in windsor, and i've heard rumour that one student has it at my school, but it is just a rumour
Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
So far here it is only meant to be the Scots.
Like we needed them anyway, all we get is haggis.
hm..i wonder what would happen if i walked around town in a hazard suit and screamed "THE FLU IS COMING!!!"

no wonder, their doctors are some of the worst in the world. luckily, europe, north america and australia have good healthcare and probably know that they have to get to the doctor if they get influensa symptoms.
yep, a doctor who knows what ''sterile enviroments'' and ''anti biotics'' is can have it's advantages.

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
true but on my way to school yesterday i was listening to the radio and it seems, that the doctors are not sure whether the current vaccine will be effective and that this could be a sudden spread at almost anytime until winter is over(for us)

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
vaccine? that will take months. but luckily, the UK has a stock pile of medicine that has been proven effective against it and most other countrys in the western world have plenty of it, so we westerners wont have to worry about it. but if it spreads to africa or the poorer areas of asia... that would be a disaster because they wont have the vaccine available and no medicine or experienced doctors

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
Even though it's hasn't officially penetrated into Oklahoma, my dad thinks it has.
It's in Texas, and Kansas already, so that means Oklahoma is sandwiched between the two infected states.
I bet there are cases here, just undiagnosed.
Note: It's in Nova Scotia now too. So that means Darkwing might want to get a his chem suite out now. XD

Re: 73 swine flu cases confirmed
We probably have a milder strain of the thing in America and Canada. It's probably mutated and become a bit weaker as it traveled from Mexico upwards. Though I understand how 200 Mexicans died, as the sanitary conditions down in Mexico aren't that impressive.

I'm not afraid. Only people that are affected by this to a great degree are young children, elderly people and people with bad immune systems.

This is somewhat false for the influenza A virus subtype H1N1. This form of flu virus usually creates an abnormally high number of deaths after contact in a population because it causes a cytokine storm in the body (like psionic storm, haha). Seriously though, this means that as the virus infects the lungs, there is an over stimulation of the immune system, via the release of cytokine bursts in the lung tissue. This causes extensive leukocyte migration to the lung tissue, destroying the vital alveoli and filling the lungs with liquid, leading to suffocation. As one can infer, people with strong immune systems, e.g. young adults like you and me, are exceptionally susceptible to death or affliction from this strain of virus. Old people and very young children are relatively safe.

The thing is, we don't have lead pipes or leaded gasoline like they do in Mexico. The whole reason everyone is dying in Mexico is that their immune systems are weakened and thus everyone is catching the stuff and then they still have the gall to jump fences...
But yeah, I don't feel like arguing that stuff right now. Swine flu is serious, but not that serious. It's like SARS and the avian flu basically; it'll cause some scares, but really it's not even close to being the possible pandemic that the media purports it to be. As long as you have access to heath care, you'll be fine.
Edit - You lost 20 points. You copied the Wikipedia section for the Spanish flu which is a variant of the avian flu, not the one that we're concerned with right now, the one that emerged from Mexico.

I think we all are woried about it. The Air Force should launch a rocket with a cure and release it into the atmosphere
Of course that would get North Korea mad and they will start launching missles at other places so mabye it's not the best idea....

Well, it is indeed sad that it was a toddler.
Well, I heard from a contact in the CDC that the virus is very similar to the Fort Dix H1N1 virus, and that the symptoms are similar to the H5N1 variant with regards to cytosine storms and immune overreaction. Therefore, young people should be a bit more careful.

Huh, I heard the same from my mom.
Immune overreaction, yeah, that does make young people prone to the virus.
Kinda ironic though.
It's almost like, the healthier you are, the more you're at risk. LOL!
