Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
I managed to get linux working on a usb!! It's all there, all working, all faster than windows by a mile!
I downloaded Xubuntu- a form of Ubuntu suited for old and low-memory computers.
It took me while- I found that I didn't have a CD, so therefore I downloaded Unetbootin, which made it able to use xubuntu on a usb.
Then I got the major problems- my computer is old. I had to go into the BIOS and basically take educated guesses that in the end worked out. I won't go into details.
Anyway, this Xubuntu is better than windows, at least at the moment. and I couldn't beleive that abiword and Microsoft Word (etc.) were compatible! Thumbs up!

Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
UPDATE: On DJ's advice, I got SLAX. It's specially made to permanently be on USB. I must say, it's slightly faster than windows while on my 4 gb memory stick Boot time takes a while, but after that, it's great.

Yep, SLAX is awesome!
Oh, and with the question you asked in the PM..
If you want to get a fast answer, just go to the slax forum and post a topic about it:

Oh, don't worry, it's not a problem.
Oh, and I know probably the only person in my school to ave heard of Linux. Unfortunately he's convinced that it isn't free, and if it is then it must be crap.

My old class also thinks that linux sucks, it's made for small children (maybe the educative versions, not all)... My new class, the ones that tried ubuntu at least 15 minutes liked it!
Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!

That's where the term 'necro' came from, ie. "I like to bring back dead topics"
DJ, anyone, help me! I have tried and failed to changing the default OS from linux to windows. I've used the command:
- Code:
sudo gedit/boot/grub/menu.lst

Umm... no it's not. It came from the word necromancy. Necrophilia has nothing to do with bringing back dead people, or topics for that matter...

Make sure you put a space between "gedit" and "/boot", otherwise It's not going to work.Shemuel wrote:

there are other ways to isntall linux you know...
Virtual PC... it's what I'm using...
And yes, command shell is tricky on linux... but much easier to learn than on windows...
Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
He's not trying to install Linux, he's already done that.
He's trying to change the grub menu's default boot selection.

I know... Was just saying that the frakking command shell on Linux was tricky and even more sensible than in windows... but in windows... formating C drive is a lot more easier...

Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
My school has a systems lab with a 30 computers that run multiple operating systems including Ubuntu and Gentoo Linux. Additionally, we also have 100+ Solaris sun rays, and 100+ computers that run Windows. After using all three, I have come to realize that Ubuntu and Solaris are very fast, and the time needed to log in and run applications is very low, even after the Windows computers were upgraded to Centrino Core 2 Duo processors. The Ubuntu and Solaris computers are optimal for work and for programming. However, the games are very limited, with the most sophisticated game we can play on the Ubuntu computers is StarCraft.
We also have a few Cray SV1 (Zeus class) supercomputers, although they are only used for our advanced computing and super computing courses.

Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
The link to "sizlopedia" is not objective, and does not accurately review the pros and cons of either operating system. I suggest that if you really want to know which operating system is better, you should go look at a more informative site or reference.
Choosing an operating system can be very difficult; it can be ultimately decided by personal preference.

Re: Wahodfgjbnesta!!!!
What a politicly correct statement!
: DJ vomits in corner:
Screw that!
Mac = Awesome, but costs money... not quite as customizable as linux, but easier to use. Pwns windows. Less viruses, less screens of death. Not as many games as windows.
Windows = Compatible with most things. The world runs on it. Tons of viruses... poo. Less secure than Mac and Linux. Costs money. BEST games. Easy to use. Not as customizable as linux.
Linux = Almost no viruses. Many free, great distributions. Highly customizable. Some games, but not that many. Very secure. Can be easy to use. (If you get Ubuntu, or opensuse)
