It was about a million to one chance.
The thing is that they were so well designed to not show on sonar that they didn't know about each other until they collided.

Submarine missions, and accompanying incidents, are supposed to stay top secret for 6 months after end of missions. not only did they manage to screw up so badly to crash in the middle of a frigging ocean, they also managed to screw up so badly that it became public news. what an... idiots.
