yeah, I reread it twice too... but it's quite logical actually: Diesel is a fluid, and because it's a fluid, it acts as a buffer against armor-piercing objects. ever saw that episode of mythbusters in which they test water as a bulletproof material? a subsonic bullet won't be stopped till two yards/meters, but a supersonic bullet immediately disintegrates.
and diesel isn't as flammable as you might think: only when under high pressure. I'd dare to push out a cigarette in a pool of diesel...
