Prologue
0.0/0
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is the story of seven crystals, of six races, and one doomed individual…

The actual story began ages ago, so long ago, that the earth itself can’t remember it. When the lands on which we live on created, also the seven crystals were created, by the unknown forces that rule this world. Six crystals were given to the sentient races that rose up from earth, stone and water. The seventh crystal was given to the earth itself. Yes, it was this crystal, the crystal that brings Blessing And Doom Simultaneously, that both divided and united the races. This crystal was the crystal that gave life to them in good times, and death in bad ones.

The races grew and developed. In a long time, they developed civilizations. Time saw great realms rise and fall, kings rule and be rebelled against, and people prosper and perish. Each race had it’s own habitat: the long-armed and lean Buron in their lush and majestic forests in the hills, the Waterkeepers and their folks in the labyrinths of the mangroves and bogs. The four-legged warriors, the Ktulu, wander in the great plains, and the Men and their Kings dwelled in their mountainous fortresses, their cave and their mines. In the north, in the eternal white forests live the great white striped black hunters, the big cats with their companions. And everywhere, in the air, fly the great wings of the Heron, the lords of the skies.

As we look west, past the grand forests of the Buron, yes, past the border between the hill woods and the mangroves, somewhere in the water streams between the great roots of even greater trees, between the roots of two mangroves which cross the waterway, we see a sleek brown boat gliding through the water, loaded with goods. At the front were two swimming shadows, pulling the boat. They were going fast, for they were hasty, very hasty. For just a few moments ago, their company had been attacked. Their leader had told them to flee with the goods and the boat to hide it, while the others defended themselves. Though they went as fast as they could, they did not make the slighted noise, and their ripples were minimal. Still did the watch notice them. “Halt! Why so hasty?” One of the two raised his head, and answered: “Our trading company has been attacked, our fellow travelers are still defending themselves against these Men! The Watch almost fell from his root in astonishment. “Men? Are you sure? That is impossible. I need to warn the others. Hakon! Get every armed individual you can get! There’s an attack going on at a party of traders!” Somewhere, from a distance, an answer came. “Yes, sir!” He then gestured them to follow. Together with the watchman they hid the boat under a tree with particularly dense roots.

When they came back, Hakon, another watch had already assembled an armed group of men and women carrying arms. Together they went back to the place where they were attacked. The rest of the party was still defending themselves on their rafts, for though they generally are a peaceful people, they certainly knew how to deal out death and agony. When the Men saw the newcomers on the scene, they all fled, stumbling and falling. The now pursuing trading party went after them, and soon the attackers were disappeared. The leader of the party spoke. “They got us by surprise, they attacked us in the back. Deklo, our pusher got heavily wounded, he needs help. ” Hakon answered. “You have fought bravely. Let us guide you to our village, and don’t worry about these Men for the moment. Our hunters will take care of them. Guided by Hakon and Beiron the watchmen, they went to village of Rootwood. As they were very tired from the fighting, they soon all fell sound asleep after their wounds and injuries were tended to.

Chapter 1, Part 2, book 1.
1.2/1
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The next morning they woke up in the comfort of a hammock. They were rocking slightly, because all the activity in the travelers’ quarters. People were walking to and fro, with fresh fish, goods and food. This is a usual ritual, for the morning was the time the travelers, traders and fishers leave to catch the fish, to trade goods in nearby villages, or just to travel further on. Also this was the time the fishermen came back, to bring fresh fish and to rest from the hard job fishers have. The two who fled the attack with the boat and goods, the two brothers Faro and Farin were already awake, watching the scene, for they were not as tired as the rest. Beiron the watch came to them. “The wise of our village wants to see you.” He said. All of the party got up now, and Faro helped Deklo get up, because he still had pains due to a deep slash in his shins, while Farin told the others, a group of travelers that had joined them during their journey. The leader got up himself. Beiron then lead them through the village, which turned out to be more of a complete town on nearer inspection, through all the people doing their business. At the end they came out on a great triangular square, flanked by three great mangroves. Under the roots of one of these, a mangrove so great that even the smaller of their roots could not be encircled by one’s arms, was a space big enough for forty.

At the back sat an old man in lotus-position. Instead of the normal shade of a beard, which is normal for this race, the man had a full beard. Although the ages had damaged his body, they had not his mind. His eyes shone bright blue. He beckoned the group to come closer. Fascinated by this appearance, both strong and fragile, they did. He spoke: “I am the wise of this village. I guide my people through times of peace, and through times of unrest. Now a group of travelers comes here and brings tidings of this unrest. What would you advise me to do?” He turned to the leader, and spoke. “You. Your name, Haekon Rata, means ‘man walking over water’. What has brought you from far, walking over the waters?” Haekon answered, hesitating. “I and my party of traders have come here to trade goods and to rest here for a day. But as I now see it this will be longer, I…” “Silence! I did not ask you any further questions.” The Wise interrupted the leader, and turned to the two brothers. “You, two brothers, Faro and Farin, you have fled with your boat to bring it’s goods to safety. You told Men were attacking your company. This is very worrying, yes, it is a just reason for unrest.” Hakon came forward. “The prisoner can be brought in, sir.” “Yes Hakon, if you would be so kind to do that.” The prisoner came in. The old man stood in front of the big Man. The Man was much larger than the old man, indeed, he was larger than anyone there, but still he looked down in fear, for out of these bright blue eyes now shone pure hate.

The old man heaved up his left hand in which he held a tall staff, and hit the Man. Hard. A lot harder than you might expect from such an old man. “Speak up!” He said. “What brings you here, attacking, robbing and frighting my people?” The man cowered on the floor and whimpered. “Have mercy, mylord!” “The old man hit again, now thundering: “SPEAK!” “We, we were soldiers on the errand of the king of man to… “Nonsense…” The wise now whispered, now holding the arm of the man what appeared to be a very painful way… “Soldiers on an errand for the king do not rob.” “No, they don’t, sir… we were sent through the high hill woods, but after three days half our company was disappeared, lost, or had perished. That was when a group of us deserted, hoping to escape through the lowlands. But what we found was much worse… after another few days when we saw these apparently defenseless travelers, we were at the brink of insanity…” The wise appeared thinking, and then said: “What was this errand of the king?” “The king had ordered us through the woods to the temples of Mother Nature and Lady Water, to occupy and to fortify it. The apemen must have…” “The old man interrupted him. “ I must urge you to speak more friendly of our dear allies the Buron. There are some in the area at the moment, and they wouldn’t be so happy if they heard you speak like that.” The Man looked anxiously around. “Anyway, the… the Buron must have known it, for Men died by crazy accidents and disappeared without warning…”

The old man grew furious. “The king must have turned insane! He has no claim on the sacred grounds of the temples! We must stop them! You, tall Man, you will find your friends, and tell them we shall offer mercy if they will turn back and bring message to the king of Men…” The old man spat on the ground, “…That we will take action if he does not immediately withdraw.” The meeting was closed. The Man was given some food for the journey, and with a push in the back he was sent away…

Chapter 1, Part 3, book 1.
1.3/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The travelers rested for another few days and night while their goods were being sold. The other group which had joined them left again, going for another destination. Because of this the only ones remaining were Farin, Faro, Deklo and Haekon the leader. Haekon decided to stay, sensing oncoming hostilities against Men. On a certain morning Beiron again came to them. He told them that the Men were away, on their way back to their king. Also the wise of the town had called a Wisegathering on the Sacred Mangroves, a couple of days away. He had asked the travelers to accompany him. This was an honor that was granted only a few, so of course they agreed. One day and some packing troubles later they were ready to leave. At the departure Beiron gave the travelers some amulets out of marsh-steel with ancient letters on it. “Wear these in the forest of spirit trees, and you will get safe through.” Heakon laughed out loud, “What would hurt us then? We can defend ourselves!” and showed his double spear. “Your blades will do nothing against the forest, beware… There are living trees there.” Having said that last Beiron walked away back into the village without looking back. “Well, I guess it’s time to go now, let’s do it.” The party went to their sleek twin canoe, loaded the goods in, and grabbed the paddles while Farin stepped into the water to push, Deklo was still not fully recovered. The wiseman spoke though, and picked up his staff. “Oh no, that won’t be necessary, no time to spare… go and sit down, I’ll arrange the propulsion.” He heaved up his staff, and waved it forward. A wave came up out of nothing and the boat was propelled forwards while Heakon and Faro steered them through the labyrinth of trees.

After a while Farin began to hum a tune. The eyes of the old man began to light up, twinkling with delight. “Yes, lets sing a song! That will enlighten our time traveling, for sure.” Farin grabbed his waterflute, and started fiddling. Faro started in with an old hero's hymn on the forests and soon everyone sang. Several songs like these were sung ere the evening fell. When the evening came, they came to the border of a wood with ghostly white trees. The wave stopped, the old man sat down and sighed. “we will go no further today. This is the border of the forest of the spirit trees. Night is not a good time to start walking in, not even for me.” That day the travelers by the speed of the wave had covered a distance that would have taken them a couple of days would they be going by ordinary means. They lighted a campfire on a piece of high ground which was supported by the roots of a mangrove and soon everybody dozed off. A watch was not needed, explained the wiseman, nothing evil dared to come so close to the forest anyhow.

The following morning they woke up by the reflection of the sun against the trees. The trees appeared to be half translucent. The old man explained why: “These trees are occupied by the spirits of former waterkeepers and wisemen. Do not anger them: they seem peaceful now, but when they’re enraged you’ll disappear without a trace.” That day they walked on over the roots of the trees, after they hid their boat and their raft in the roots of a mangrove. The whole time it was silent, not a single bird could be seen or heard and no leaf stirred although the wind was blowing. The wiseman was carrying a piece of wood, constantly muttering something which was unintelligible for the fellow travelers. After what seemed like two days they came onto an open spot with a burning fire. Suddenly they saw the skies again: They had indeed walked almost two days: it was beginning to get morning again, although they didn’t feel as tired as if they had walked that whole time. The wiseman explained it: “You do not get tired here. The natural, magic and mystic energies here constantly replenish your own. Now I must perform the Everlasting Ritual, I will throw wood on the Eternal Fire of Hope.” He then made a circle in the soil with several intricate drawings in hit. He threw the wood in the fire, and the fire lighted up, giving a blueish-white glow. He sat down. “it will take the others at least another day to arrive here, let us sit down for the time being. I have to warn you, it will get very boring.”

Indeed after a day came the first of the other wisemen. All of them were alone, except a few which traveled together. All of them first performed the Everlasting Ritual. They completely ignored the group of traders, who now layed down on the ground. Faro and Farin were Waterkeepers, so they exercised their abilities by playing with a large droplet of water, trying to hit each other with it while balancing on a big tree root. The game is actually harder than it looks, the water droplet tends to fall apart when influenced by more forces at once. They had to keep it together, try to find a hole in each other's defense and keep balanced all at the same time. It is needless to say that they regularly lost balance, got wet being hit or let a droplet explode. They did this for some time till they got bored. Normally this game was very exhausting, but because of the energies in the air they were tireless and got bored. After what seemed days, (which it wasn’t this time, but they were bored) the silent convention of the old men ended, and one of them came towards them. They couldn’t tell if it was ‘their’ wiseman because they looked all pretty much the same in the twilight. “This is very exceptional, yes very exceptional indeed,” he spoke. “We were very soon in agreement... Normally a Wisegathering takes weeks…” He laughed. “Maybe we old men get slow nowadays. Anyway, it has been decided: we will take action. When we get back to the village a company of archers, spearmen and armsmen and armswomen will be assembled and we will head for the Temples in every available craft.” Soon they left, and the Wisemen too, each going to his own direction, But first their wiseman did something else. He produced a flask from somewhere in his white robes, stooped, and filled it with water from a pool in the armpit of a tree. “May the water from this holy forest strengthen us in journey and battle.” He said, and he hid it again in his robes. They went off and walked again for a night and day, they came out of the white trees at dusk. They immediately went on from there in the boat and at dawn they were at the village of Rootwood. They were welcomed by Beiron and a company of bowmen. Beiron already shouted from a distance: “The bowmen from Blackwater near the the forest of spirit trees were here first, I heard it all from them. Armsmen and -women are already being raised from the population now. Welcome back.”

Chapter 1, Part 4, book 1.
1.4/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

After a few days they were all ready. All Waterkeepers and their armed kin were assembled at Rootwood. Seven more Wisemen came with them, relying on their deputies to guide the villages in their absence. The Rootwood Wiseman stood up after everyone settled in their boats and crafts. He raised his voice, until everyone could hear him. “Forth! Today we will go to protect what is dear to us. The victory will be joyful, but the cost will be high. You will suffer pain, loss. You’ll have to settle with less comfort than your used to. For an example: I cannot thrust forward a whole fleet with my waves. You’ll have to row yourself. Now go!” He sat down. Faro shouted in a rush: “To the temples of Lady Nature and Mother Water!” The old man laughed and corrected him: “It’s the temples of Mother Nature and Lady Water.” Faro muttered. “Wiseman. Hmmpf. Like I didn’t know that.” After a few days of sailing the first group, scouts in small kayaks, had the temples in sight. They soon reported back to the main body of the fleet. Hakon, who was one of the scouts as well, told the tale. “The army of Men is camping just outside of the ditches. we were able to contact the Buron, a party of them is now coming towards us to talk. While the fleet got closer, a group of Buron indeed neared and boarded the boat in which the Wisemen and the brothers sat. They sat down on the edge, while one of them went forward, and showed the others a black stone with inscriptions.

“I am Furai, son of Leia. We have been watching these fowl robbers, the thugs which call themselves Men. They went through our forests, our beautiful homes, and fowled it up, littered the ground and left bad smells… were they have been, no animal dares to come now. And now they have been here like this for days, desecrating the temple grounds. We don’t know why they are here.” The old man looked thoughtfully. “Fortunately, we do know though. The king had sent them on an errand to occupy and fortify the the temples.” “What? Khot! The arrogant motherless son of a cow! How does he dare! He has no right to…” “I know. It’s not right. That’s why we’re here. I only wonder why they’re not inside yet?” “A reclusive Man lives here with his family. When they came here, a lieutenant was sent forward to invest his cooking fire. When he walked over the bridge, the man, ‘uncle’, we call him, asked what was his business here. The lieutenant answered that they had not come to answer questions from nosy peasants and that he had to go aside. At that the man grasped his neck, crushed it with a sickening sound, and threw him away. Since then the soldiers had not dared to come closer.” Haekon had a funny look of unbelief on his face. “What? The first company, the elite of the Men armies, scared of one single man?” Furai answered him. “Yes, how unlikely it may seem. Apparently the tale of a mighty man of mighty magics living in the temples has even reached the kingdom of Men. They’re hesitating.”

Early in the evening, just before dusk they reached the edge of the forest and they looked out over the lake towards the temples and the army camp. There was a sudden stir, and little specks of light from torches hurriedly move to and fro in the camp. The Rootwood Wiseman stood up, and gave a sign for the fleet to halt. “There they are, the foes we have been looking to drive away. We will encounter them soon, but not today. First, we’ll have a rest. Sleep while you can, you won’t be much of a warrior when you’re to tired to stand. Besides, dawn is a beautiful sight in these regions, you wouldn't want to miss it.” Fires were lighted, watches and guards were chosen, and those who could slept.

Chapter 1, Part 5, book 1.
1.5/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The next morning everyone wake up. Already it was warm and moist. A foreboding of a Thunderstorm was in the air, although it was bright blue now. Now the soldier camp could clearly be seen, a mass of nerveous movement. A party of scouts were sent forward, and another one was sent to the Buron, together with the group that had slept with them during the night. They moved forwartd till about 100 yards. Now they could clearly make out the enemies. Someone walked forward from the ranks. “I am general Fieldes Hetjam, general of the First Company, elite of the King’s men, commander of the army from Lutovia till Geretium. Who are you to threathen me by bearing arms against us?” The Old Wisemen rose. “who we are is not important. What is important though, is that you leave the temple grounds now. Sacred grounds will not be violated by arms-bearing filth.” The general got angered. “I’ll be the judge of that!” The child of the recluse was playing at the bridge, playing with a circling fish. From the distance it was not possible to see it clearly. The General walked towards the bridge. Farin sensed his intentions. “Look out! The kid!” Everything happened in a blink of an eye.The Wisemen were quickest. One gathered all the energy he could find, compressing it as a bright light between his hands. A second heaved up his staff, small lightning circling around the tip. The Rootwood one heaved up his hands, causing a bulge of water to rise from the lake. Heakon dashed towards the front of the boat. Then it happened.

The general heaved his sword, and struck the girl. It seemed the gods themselves were furious. The bulge of water formed a giant floodwave, and crashed towards the group of soldiers closest to the general. The man with the lightining struck the water with his staff, emitting a bright lightning bolt through the water, striking the soldiers close to the water’s edge. The man with the energy aided both attacks, giving them extra force. Heakon dove into the wate just a fraction later, and swam to the girl as fast as possible. Farin dove in too, going to the Temples. The rest of the fleet, including Faro, sailed to the shore and the bridge, trying to land at the back of the soldiers. They were unlucky. The enemy had forseen this, and turned, rose their spears, and slaughtered the first line. Some could form a water-shield just in time, averting certain death. Some who had not the time or the magic to do that, dove sideways into the water, only to drown under the rest of the fleet. Next were the bowmen from the water. Bowstrings were pulled, crosbows were turned off the safety-pal, and a rain of arrows descended on the First Company, slamming breaches intom the shield wall, drinking happily from the blood that flowed everywhere to the water. Farin in the meanwhile was swimming deep in the water. The constant rain of arrows was forcing him to put a safe distance of water between him and this deadly rain. Heakon had already reached the bridge. The child had fallen into the water, and drifted in a red haze of blood. Heakon pulled her with him, towards the temples in the cover of the bridge.

Chapter 1, Part 6, book 1.
1.6/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The general was in his element. With his sword in his hand and a light shield in his other, he was shouting orders at his men, sometimes helping to fill a breach in the shield wall, sometimes picking up a spear and throwing it towards the fleet. Even though the smile of war was on his face, he was worried. Although the fleet he was fighting was hopelessly outnumbered by his army even after the decimation in the forests, and they had better weaponry, he had two worries: the first was magic. The First Company did not have a single spark of magic in it’s ranks, but the very backbone of a Waterkeepers militia, as he knew, was aquatic magic. It was like exposing an open wound to your opponent, his men were completely defenseless against it. The second problem was the recluse. He knew for sure that the cracking of his favorite lieutenant's neck wasn’t the only trick he could do, and he was sure that killing his daughter wouldn’t please him. Still he fought on. He knew very well that doubt was the quickest way to defeat, and he also knew that that was by no means an option. He wasn’t worried by these apemen, he was sure that they were too cowardly to fight out in the open, as they had shown during the march through the forests. He found another opponent against him. A reckless Waterkeeper had slipped through a breach and was cowardly attacking his Men from the back. But that wouldn’t last for long. With a quick lash with his sword he snapped the double spear, and a second one bit deep into his side.

The fleet was taking heavy losses, but so were the Men. Some got drowned by a big wave from the Rootswood wisemen, some got electrified, and many were forced down by the thousands of blobs of water coming from the hundreds of Waterkeepers, after which spears were driven through them. Many of the fleet found their death on the spears sticking out from the spear wall, some were pushed to death in the fray. Some with pickhammers were able to crush the enemy shields and kill the soldiers behind them, causing breaches, through which they slipped to attack from the sides and the back. Unfortunately though, every fallen Man was replaced by two more. This was not the case with the fleet, they only got limited numbers. Despite all the killing, the lines of battle did not move. Footholds on the land didn’t last long, and the First Company stayed on their defensive line, ordered to do so by their general. In the meanwhile, on each side archers were sending their deadly rain on the enemy. The fleet archers were the superior of them. They were more numerous, had more skill, and had better weapons together with thousands of blessings on their bows. This way they managed to get more arrows in the air and more arrows in their targets. The Wisemen occasionally cast a spell, raised a devastating wave, or sent a deadly electric shock through the water, while directing their warriors and indicating targets for the bowmen.

Farin had reached the island of the Temples. He helped Heakon to get the girl out of the water and carried it to the Temple. When the lonely Man saw his wounded daughter, he broke. He sank down on his knees, caressing the crying girl. The sword of the General had taken her eyes, rendering her blind, covering her beautiful face red with blood. “Father?” “yes?” “My eyes… they hurt… Why is it so dark? I’m scared.” The man was ashen, even more pale than he already was. His long blond hair hung down over her, wet with tears. “Father? Where is mother?” “mother is coming now… be strong!” Her mother came walking towards the group. “I’ve put the children in a safe place, but where is Maya? I’ve searched…” then she saw her girl. “Oh my god, No! don’t let it be true! No! Maya!” she rushed towards her. She held her against her chest. “Everything’s going to be okay, honey… I’m here now.” “mommy? I’m scared. I’m feeling dizzy…” her head fell sideways. Here weak, soft breathing was barely audible. The mother got up, and with tears in her eyes she walked away into the temples with the girl at her chest. Heakon looked devastated. “I have seen a girl dying like that before… my young sister, her life taken by a band of thugs… I will not let this happen unrevenged again.” With a new determination the Man stood up. His eyes were grim. “Who did this to her? Because I’m coming with you.”

Thunderclouds were drifting overhead. The sky began to look black and dark. Blue eyes stood grim. A strong wind began to blow, putting white heads of foam on the lake. He unsheathed a long and slim dark-blue sword and held it up against the skies. His eyes shone with a mixture of sadness, pure hate and a fury that would even make the foulest fiends look innocent. “Curse him! Curse him! By all the gods that are good, Curse him!!!”

The clouds broke. It seemed that even the gods had unleashed their wrath. The lightning set the three holy trees on top of the Temple of Mother Nature afire. The thunder shocked the earth and all the warring parties, The rain poured down like the heavens had come falling on top of the earth. The mayhem of the battlefield turned even worse. Everyone had trouble to stay upright and fight in the thick layer of mud, fallen bodies and blood. The waves on the lake grew higher and higher, the fleet now also had to keep the boats and crafts afloat and stable in the storm, while at the same time they had to hold back the Men. The torrential rains inundated large parts of land, changing the battlefield into a bog, making the fight even more difficult. On both sides the warriors got tired. The critical moment of the battle would come soon…

Chapter 1, Part 7, book 1.
1.7/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Farin looked back and saw the holy temple trees burning. Fear seized his heart, it was an ominous sign... he, Heakon and the Man ran over the bridge with weapons in their hands. Farin swung his shortsword in one hand and grabbed a dagger of Men from the ground. he stabbed a Man who was laying his bow aside to protect it from the rain in the side and snapped his string with his sword before finishing the stunned Man with a slash in his neck. on his left side Heakon just slashed at a neck with his double spear and finished his opponent with a stab in the chest. the Man hit a fully armored soldier on the helmet with his staff, and and surprisingly, a satisfactory "crack" confirmed the broken neck. In the meanwhile he nearly got decapitated by a high sweeping longsword, and Farin had to duck and stab his sword upwards to block another beat from the heavy sword. while he turned out of the way of the stabbing move that followed, he stabbed his dagger underneath the opponent's arms into his stomach. the Man fell sideways into a upstanding spear. Heakon had trouble. his double spear had been snapped into two halves while blocking a blow with an axe, and he held a half in both hands, fending of the increasingly faster blows. He almost tripped over into the water when the recluse blocked another axe cut and forced the axeman into the mud with his staff. Heakon finished it with two spears in the chest. "thanks, ehm... ...i don't even know your name?" "call me Reiver." Reiver looked upon the battlefield and his eyes were ablaze.

Faro supported one of the old wisemen. "young boy... i am getting tired... I'm not as young as i used to be... but what do you think, at 231 years of age... could you please hold this?" faro looked slightly incredulous at a small light-blue stone which seemed it couldn't be heavy at all, but when he picked it up it was so heavy he needed two arms to hold it. he felt the magic sear through his arms into his body. "what... is this?" "This? this is the heart of our people, my son... i suggest you keep it safe, since I'm too tired now to use it any longer... farewell..." the old man sighs, closes his eyes, and his body disappears in a smoke drifting away in the wind. Only then did he notice the arrow which had been buried in his shoulder falling to the ground.

The general cursed under his breath while blocking another blow. They were losing the fight, and he knew it. He needed to retreat now, or fight to the death. He would choose the latter, but he had to think about his men. they didn't go here at free will like him, he had the duty to give them a chance to survive. He knew that the retreat would have to lead through the forest, so that chance was small, but it was all he could do. He shouted the retreat command and he let his troops form a defensive circle slowly moving back to the forest. For what seemed like hours he kept defending and walking backwards while not seeming to get closer to the forest, but at last they were in the trees. most of his men now went running while he and a few of his most loyal men defended the rear. Only few of these swimming people pursued them, but the lonely Man with the strange golden hairs was amongst them. He ambushed them from behind a tree. One slash. One seemingly wealthy swimmer with two broken halves of a spear down. Stab. Pull back. Block. Hack. Two down. Second Slash. It was blocked by a wooden staff, but he didn't feel the shock through his arms or the wonder that it was blocked by wood. He went on like in trance. he blocked the wooden staff, then kicked the Man in the groin. It worked effectively, the crippled man slowly sinking to the ground in agonizing pain, but before he could deliver the final strike to vanquish his greatest danger his sword was beaten aside by a young Swimmer with eyes ablaze. The general's damaged and overused weapon finally broke,. He threw the stump away and lunged at the boy and disarmed him with his bare hands. They fell over each other onto the forest floor and he tried to strangle the boy when he felt something burning being buried deep into the soft flesh above his hip. He rolled sideways and looked at his stomach. He looked at the boy. He struggled to concentrate and looked at the face of the boy. So young, so young... Somewhere in his body he found a last bit of energy to speak. "Armageddon... Is near..." He sighed. It was over.

Farin slowly got up panting while he looked at the general drawing his last breath. The Man who killed his master, the Man responsible for the death of many of his friends, the Man who wanted to occupy the temples, the man responsible for so much misery lay there on the ground with his dagger buried in his side. His head was light, he felt dizzy, he saw black spots before his eyes. He saw the ground getting closer to him, but he did not feel his body hitting the leaves and roots below him.

(End of Chapter 1)

Chapter 2, Part 1, book 1.
2.1/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Black. Dark. Stars. Night? It must be night... Where? where was he? Who was he? He felt like he was looking at himself from the eyes of another person. What was he? He felt... He felt pain, searing through his body. Tormenting, unbearable pain. He felt like screaming he tried to scream., he opened his mouth, but there was no sound. Screaming. Screaming for what? Vengeance? He tried to get up, he tried to walk towards a tree, but stumbled. He got up again and leaned against the tree. How did this tree get here? He was on the edge of a forest, with some distance away a dark straight object against the light sky of the full moon, and behind that water. He looked turned to see the moon. He didn't know why, but he felt a great urge that came from nowhere to follow the moon, to go were the moon disappeared. He walked.

Faro got up from his hammock with a pain in his side. He looked at his side why, he must have been sleeping with his clothes on, even with his hip bag around his shoulders. He looked in it and saw the stone. Oh yes, now he remembered. The Heart. He swung his legs over the edge of the hammock and rubbed his sore side. Next time he should really try to remember to put off the bag before going to sleep. his whole body ached from the events of yesterday, but he would be fine. He set his feet down on the floor of the craft, and landed in a small pool of water. He tried to let it form a ball of water and levitate it to get it out of the boat, but instead of that a large wave arose from the lake and forced the boat further onto the beach. "Wow, did i just do that?" Surprised he let go of the power he raised and immediately the wave was gone. he stepped out onto the wet sand and walked towards one of the great fires that were burning all over the terrain. He asked for some water from one of the men watching the fires. After he finished drinking from the bag of water he was given he wiped his mouth. "Where is my brother?" "He's still sleeping. We found him lying unconscious on the edge of the forest, we had to carry him all the way to one of the boats to let him sleep." "Where's Heakon?" "He's in the temples, he's dying..."
"What? I have to see him!" "Easy boy, you're not well either, you look pale, here, eat something first." The man watched the fire while he poked it here and there. Burnt meat and hair. He remembered again why he disliked funeral pyres. well, there was no choice. the dead had to be taken care of before diseases had a chance to strike. well, at least these Men had a chance to be buried on holy ground. Finally Farin finished eating the fish and threw the inedible remains on the fire. He got up and walked to the temples.

The Light was bright on top of the water temple. After yesterday's terrible weather the skies were totally cleared, and you could see as far as the hills beyond the great forests. Heakon drank some of the holy water. He had a coughing fit and some blood seeped over his lips. It would be no use, he was dying. he had seen these wounds before and he knew there was no escape from the death that would follow after long dreadful hours of pain. He saw Faro walking up on the long stairs of the upper pyramid. he tried to smile, but only managed to produce a grimace. Irony... He remembered himself walking up those same stairs too when he was that age, to listen to the last words of his dying father. he could have never predicted that one day he would die like that too... Irony, oh irony of fate. The boy was at his side. Pulling the last reserves of his strength together and spoke. "My boy... What have you grown... Are you in full health? Where is your brother.... He isn't death, isn't he?" "No Heakon, he isn't, but he is sleeping." "Oh... Remember to tell him he's a fool, and he has guts... The people should be eternally thankful to him. And you... You should always keep defending the life of your heart, never betray yourself... May there be peace and prosperity to you all, unlike there has been to me... now go, boy, because death is not pretty." He coughed again and more blood appeared on his chin.

Faro walked down the stairs in tears. He almost stumbled because he did not see the steps, but he quickly found his equilibrium back. In front of him on the top of the other temple the trees were still ominously burning. some people there were trying to stop the fire, and he decided it would be best if he joined them. He walked up against the other stairs with several bags of water, and soon he was trying to protect himself from the heat while making the ground on the top of the temple wet to cool down the immediate surroundings. The whole noon was filled with the sounds of the blaze and the people trying to put it down, and the cries of agony from Heakon and other wounded on the top of the other temple. In the early evening the biggest of the three trees started to crack making sounds of the thunder that felled it, and soon it fell down taking the other smaller two with it, falling away from the temple of water onto the steep slopes of the pyramid. The mess and rubble from the event was greater than imaginable, but at last the fires were able to be quenched. Soon one side of the pyramid was one steaming, blackened slope coming straight from hell, but at least the flames had disappeared.

The following morning Faro checked out his brother to find out he was still sleeping. He walked over to the boat where the Rootwood Wiseman was meditating. "The trees, they are burnt to ashes." The Wise looked up at the disturbance. "What? Oh yes, i know... And the spring of the holy water has dried out. Don't worry though. The three trees and the water are older than history, they have roots buried deep into the temple grounds, they'll rise, bloom and sparkle once more, just like the heart of our people has to grow again, become fierce, strong and proud after this great disaster. We all need to find ourselves back and mourn the dead. But mark my words, boy, the people will grow again, grow and prosper."

Chapter 2, Part 2, book 1.
2.2/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Farin catched her just in time. He knows she was just fooling around, just like him, but he would never really let her fall. She couldn't see, and a bad fall would easily happen. "Hey, you didn't need to catch me, i wasn't really falling!" "Yeah sure, say that again when you fall into the water." "Hah, I know you'll always catch me." "I feel used. Maybe I should not catch you once, just to teach you a lesson." "No! you wouldn't, would you?" She looked frightened and Farin stroked her hair. "No Maya, of course I wouldn't. You know I love you." He smiled, tickled her and she leaned back into his arms. He leaned his head on her shoulder and so the boat drifted on further through the water. "Hey, here's another fish trap that's filled. Lately the traps really have been fuller, don't you think so too?" "I wouldn't know, I don't know how it was in the past." Farin laid the boat fast to a mangrove root and stepped out to grab the trap from the other side. He laid Maya's hand on the other hand, she grabbed it and together they hoisted the net full of fish into the boat. "Woah, that'll be enough for today." Maya opened the net and started sorting out the good fish which she put in one of the baskets, and the one which were too small she put back in the water. In the meanwhile Farin grabbed a new net and put it in place. He loosened the ties, jumped in the boat and pushed off. Maya finished the job of sorting the fish out before they got home. She was getting really good at this, even when not considering her small drawback. This was already the fourth week they have been fishing together every day. He tried to do it alone first, but without a second person it was almost impossible. Since Faro has left with her father... Well, it was probably better anyway. He had changed a lot in the passing eight years. Now he was traveling with her father to seek out these northern great cats.

They entered the village and Farin laid the boat fast at the front platform of their house. He helped Maya out of the boat, and she walked on her own towards the door. When she felt the familiar edge of it her usual unsure, careful walk disappeared and she walked towards the window and opened the shutters. Since it was still before noon, the sun was nice and warm on her skin. Even though she could not see it, she always loved the sun. It reminded her of happy days in her youth, when she could still... She shivered. Let's not think about those horrible events any more. It was a beautiful day after all. Farin grabbed the baskets of fish out of the boat and brought them over to the smoking hut where a lot of them would be hung in the smoke of wood fire to preserve them for later. One basket he kept to sell them as fresh fish later today. He put it away where he would get it later, and went home for a drink. He walked through the door towards Maya, who turned towards him at the sound of him coming in, and kissed her on the cheek. "Ah, you're back." "Yeah, I didn't have to wait. We're the first ones back, we're really getting good at this." "Was it like that with your brother too?" "No... We worked swiftly alright, but we weren't always this fast, and we usually didn't catch this much fish." "I wonder how he's doing now..." "Yeah, me too."

Faro got down and looked at the two hares at the edge of the hot spring. They weren't extraordinary fat or fleshy, but they would do for some time. He supported his small crossbow on a branch in front of him and looked at the pair, waiting for Reiver to find a suitable position to shoot the first, after which he would shoot the second before it ran away; the usual tactic. He let his eyes wander over the water and dreamed of the lakes at home, when he noticed the ripples in the otherwise so smooth water surface. He looked for the source of the ripples, but couldn't believe his own eyes. A blond girl was drifting in the water, enjoying the heat of the water and singing a soft song. He looked at her for some time, obsessed, wondering what a girl like that was doing here with the nearest settlement more than a month's walk away. The sound of a breeze in the trees brought him back to attention and he looked at the hares again. He saw one of them lying down with an arrow straight to his heart and the blood slowly coloring the snow on the ground red. The other was sniffing his friend as if it didn't know what arrows or hunters were. Weird, he thought. He aimed the crossbow again and prepared to shoot, when he heard something bristling in the wood behind him. He looked around and stared in the face of a giant black and white striped cat. He moved up his crossbow in an reflex, but it growled in such a menacing way that he immediately laid it back down on the ground.

Chapter 2, Part 3, book 1.
2.3/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Reiver silently whispered a curse. Why didn't the idiot shoot? What was taking him so long? Suddenly he heard a strong growl. "Well, that explains a bit. We're further than i thought already." He slowly got up and looked over the lake towards Faro's approximate position. Then he noticed the naked lady. a female companion? Apparently he was wrong. They have never allowed it, and they probably still didn't. A rogue tiger then? In that case Faro would be in a lot more serious trouble than he thought. He squatted down again and grabbed another arrow and put it on the bow. He turned his attention away from the girl and slowly circled around the open spot around the water.

Faro backed down careful not to trip while trying to keep his attention fixed at the big beast. He had put down his bow on the ground and it seemed pacified, but it still was looking at him with clearly no friendly interest. "Heh... Good kitty, nice kitty... Please do not kill me!"

The girl suddenly rose out of the water. She had heard a growl. She thought it was one of the big guys, Tobi or Rick maybe. She got out of the water and walked in the direction of the growl. Maybe they were fighting about some prey. She pushed some branches aside and looked upon something she'd never seen before. It was indeed Tobi looking at some weird creature. It had a brownish fur and was wearing very light clothing for the winter in these northern regions. It was slowly backing off from the tiger, terrified. A light crossbow with a yet unfired arrow lay on the ground. "Tobi! Be nice!" The tiger looked round to the girl, mocked and sat down. The other just stayed where he was, looking at her as if she were a ghost. She looked down and realized she wasn't exactly clad for company. Besides, she was getting chilly after being out of the springs for a while. "Stay here, whatever or whoever you are." She hesitated, then walked to the edge of the water where she picked up a cloth and dried herself off completely. She put on her dress, slung a bag over her shoulder and walked back to the place where she had found it.

Faro bumped into Reiver as he ran like hell from that place and crashed out of the bushes. "Reiver!... Big cat... Naked... Lady!" "First of all, be silent. You have made enough of a racket already." Suddenly the tiger emerged out of the bushes. "...And ehm, second, it's rather stupid to run away from a snow tiger with your back turned towards them like that if you do not want to get mauled." Faro immediately turned around. This time the tiger did nothing but stare. They just stood there in a part of empty space between the stems of the great trees, one tiger and two men, a Waterkeeper and a recluse of Men. Reiver cautiously looked around to check the surroundings. He realized they could not simply run away or climb up a tree to escape. The tiger was better than them at both. He whispered in Faro's ear. "Okay... Since these beasts don't listen to reason, not without a companion anyway..." "-But-" "...And because we certainly can't outrun or outclimb it, we'll have to outwit it." "-But listen-" Reiver grabbed something in his bag and clenched it in his fist. Faro caught a glimpse of an orange and black little stone. He held his hand out and opened it. Lo and Behold! On his hand a bright fire ignited, setting the whole scene in a warm glow. The fire reflected in the tiger's eyes. He blinked with his eyes and slowly backed away until he turned around, disappearing in the bushes.

Reiver let the fire burn for a while to be sure the beast was gone and then closed his hand around the stone. The fire disappeared and he put the stone back in his bag again. He sighed and closed his eyes while Faro looked at him in wonder. "You see, Faro, it's not how big your fwoosh is, it's how you use it. Now let's put some distance between us and this place.

The girl looked around again. The... thing was gone again. She followed the trail it had made while charging through the forest and came across the tiger Tobi wandering around aimlessly. She laid her hand down on his head and scratched him a bit. "Come on, you lazy twit, what are you doing here? I thought you would go after it?" She walked a bit further but he still hesitated. She looked around and sighed. "Come on, you!" He finally stepped forward and walked after her. She swiftly jogged past some bushes when her dress got caught behind some branch. While she got down to free it she heard some voices. She held still for a moment, then got up. she sprinted along the trail again and came out on a small clearing on the ground level. The second pair of footprints confirmed what she thought: her furry little friend was not alone. What seemed even stranger though was that the second pair was different... Human. But not a companion: There weren't any foreign tiger tracks around and her people would never wear such heavy and stiff boots as the one who made these tracks. Men usually never ventured that far north... However, it didn't seem that weird to her. After that encounter just a few moments ago she was ready to expect anything.

She ran further again, following the trails was fairly easy now. It seemed they were going round, back to the hot springs again. Now she could easily hear the voices. Tobi was right behind her, jogging along almost completely soundlessly. suddenly Taira, another one of her group, the young girl, joined them out of nothing, tagging along to see if they were hunting something tasty. They shot out of a bush again and looked at one Man and the furry guy standing there, waiting for them to face them. The Man somehow made a fire in his hand. Tobi growled and blinked at the sight of the fire, but this time he and Taira did not turn around, now she was with them.

Chapter 2, Part 4, book 1.
2.4/1
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Reiver let the firestone drop out of his hand in surprise. As soon as the stone lost contact with his hand the flame diminished and sputtered out. "Wait, what? Is it true after all?" Faro looked at Reiver while keeping an eye on the tigers. "What is true?" "The rumors we heard in the last village... One girl with a group of tigers." "That's what i tried to tell you.. The beast listens to the girl. but is that what they really look like? I thought them a lot smaller." "Yes, these are real snow tigers. With a female companion. I never thought that was possible." The girl laughed. "I thought the same of the timr you'd ever come back to these regions, Reiver." Reiver looked surprised anf looked at the girl again. "Do I know you?" "No, i was just a little girl back when you last visited. You probably knew my father though, the shaman Owl's whisper." Reiver thought for a second, then his eyes brightened up. "So you're Feather of raven? My my, you have grown..." "Oh, so you do remember me?" "Yes, it's been some time, but i still remember that little bright girl."

One of the tigers, the small one walked forward towards a terrified Faro and sniffed at him. Suddenly it pounced at him and Faro yelled while he fell over on his back, he tried to get from underneath the tiger but it was just too heavy. He suddenly stopped struggling when the tiger caught him unaware and licked his face. Feather laughed and walked forward, but instead of trying to stop the tiger she just patted it on the back.
"Is that your friend? One of my tigers caught him spying at me while i was bathing." "WHAT? Was that what was keeping you from shooting?" "No, i was about to be mauled by one of this guy's friends before you shot that hare!" She scratched the tiger behind it's ears and stooped to the ground to look at Faro. "It's not a guy, it's a girl." Suddenly Faro started struggling furiously to get from under the tiger again. Feather nudged the tiger's flank and talked to her. "Come on girl, that'll be enough." The tiger stepped aside and let Faro get up.

Feather looked at the sky for a few moments and brushed her still rather wet hair out of her eyes. "Well, i suppose i'll be going back. The days are getting really short again, evening is nigh and there's some snow in the air. Do you guys want to go with me?" Reiver answered . "Well, we don't want to be a burden for you... if you got a fire we still have our own meat. That is, if the tigers haven't eaten it yet." "Nah... they only eat dead meat when they're really hungry, if you'd put one dead hare and one live hare right in front of them they'd go after the live one." "Well, we'll see your theory, because that's a lot like we did. Faro, once again you're one lucky ball of hairs." Faro laughed. "Well, I take that as a compliment, naked baby! At least i don't have to wear dozen's of layers of garments just to stay warm." Feather laughed and hit Faro. "Hey! i don't need that much! You see?" "Yes, i saw you didn't need any clothes at all very clearly." Reiver punched at Faro's ears. "Making such comments to a lady is quite rude, you furball."

They walked on in a line through the forest. Faro still didn't the trust the tigers and so he was glad that Feather stayed very close to him. Suddenly she bent over to him and spoke softly. "I don't mind, it wasn't your fault, I wouldn't expect me here either if i were you." Faro twitched his ears in shame. Feather saw it and held them still. "Hey, i know those little twitching ears from my tigers! If you didn't have fur there your cheeks would have been bright red!" "Well, i never thought I'd be pounced and licked by a girl without warning and then hearing from another that she didn't mind i accidentally peeked at her while she was bathing within one period of light." "Oh well, i presume you don't meet a lot of girls around these regions, so i understand." "Well, thank you for being so nice and not letting your tigers maul me." "Be careful or i'll let them pounce and lick you to death." "I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't... I've had enough for today." "Oh don't worry, Taira is very young still and wants to play with everything and everyone she sees, They're not all like that."

They found themselves on the other side of the hot springs now. Reiver quickly retrieved the dead hare who was indeed untouched. He quickly flayed it with his skilled hands and put some parts above the fire for himself, Faro and Feather while he put the rest away for later. It was indeed already getting darker quickly. The clouds became denser too and soon there were flakes of snow falling from the darkened sky.
Faro finished a leg of meat and laid down on his back. "Hmm, and still i prefer fish. It's a shame there aren't any rivers or streams with fish near here." "Oh yes there are, but only in spring when the fish come upstream to mate and lay eggs, then you can grab the fish with your bare hands when they are trying to get over waterfalls and the rapids." Feather finished her part too and threw the bone away. She laid down too, but she rolled with her back against the side of one of the tigers. Faro turned around to Reiver who was still eating. "Hey Reiver, where will we sleep tonight? I haven't seen any caves or abandoned dens near and we haven't made any shelter yet." "I haven't either, but i guess we could sleep under the trees, here, the dense trees stop a lot of the snow while it already snows less here because of the springs, and it ain't that cold either. I do think we should have someone on guard though, I've seen wolves around. The fire would hold them on a distance for a while, but it will not last." Feather got up a bit and leaned on her elbow. "Why would you need to, Reiver, you're surrounded by a whole group of tigers!" "I think that's exactly his concern, well, at least it's mine." Faro turned on his side to see Feather better. She just smiled. "You silly, as long as i am here they won't unless i tell them to."

Faro yawned and Reiver finally finished his portion. He rummaged in his pack until he found what he needed. "I agree, Faro, let's go to sleep. Feather, don't you need some cover while sleeping?" "That's very considerate of you Reiver, but i don't need to. it isn't very cold and Taira here keeps me warm." She patted the side of the tiger laying against her. "Wait, this isn't Taira, this is Rick. She's probaly bathing, she does that often at this time of the evening." She yawned and closed her eyes. Faro got his cover to and wrapped himself entirely in it. "Well, good night all." "Sleep well." "G'night." Faro just lay there fir a while, looking at their roof of trees and the rare snowflakes falling down. At a sudden moment he felt something to his right. Something moist and hot was moving against him. He dared to look and realized it was Taira, the relatively smaller tiger who had just returned from bathing and now laid against him. He didn't dare to move for a long time, all his senses were ate full alert while his mind constantly tried to convince himself to relax and to go to sleep. After a while he realized that he became rather warm and fuzzy from the heat that was radiating from the tiger's body.
