New web domain extensions?!?! .xxx now? God Help Us

Well, I'm sure all of you have heard about this, but how do you think it will effect the internet?

Will .com sites go extinct? (I don't think so)

More corporate control? (Probably)

Thoughts on this?

IMO, nothing will change other than the fact that there will be more extensions. But if you think about it, there's already a plethora of extensions out there, adding more isn't really gonna effect anything, at least I don't think so

Guess what... I don't like it. I would like the major domains to be restricted to national (eg. .us, .ie), an international (.world or summat), non-profit organisations (.org) and educational (.edu)
Perhaps an .xxx would be useful, would make porn blacklisting easier.

All the info can be contained in the bit between www. and .com - there's an argument for hiding the www. as the http// is. The only reason Icann has decided this is to make money selling these domains. Probably no impact upon our use of the internet, but it's just a rather tacky move.

.xxx is a good move because, as stated by Shem, porn blacklisting will be made much easier. IMO they should restrict porn to .xxx only.

Yeah, that would be a good idea! But, they probably won't do it because then a lot of the ISPs might try to block .xxx sites altogether, which in turn would cut off a lot of customers.

You cant force all porn sites onto .xxx domains.

1.) Personally I believe doing this is morally wrong. Its kinda like "All Black people live over here" However, this isnt really something that makes the transition impossible.

2.) The sheer number of porn sites makes it quite difficult, to check every single website for pornography (It would take a program, human power could not search the internet. Writing the program and parameters would be very difficult.) and then send them a letter forcing them to by a new domain name.

3.) How do you define the border of porn. I can do a google search and find sexy pictures that appear on the results page. If I look at the URL it says google.com, does Google (and every other search provider) need to buy a new domain name then rout searches that match a certain criteria set by (whom ever decides what defines porn, deciding this would itself be an enormous struggle) to the new page google.xxx

After writing i should rephrase my self, It isn't impossible, But it would take (probably) massive wars (dont think strictly wars like Bang Bang, i shoot a gun) to decide parameters, a collective of fantastic CS guys to write a web crawler to do the work. The UN would have to decide on laws about what to do with websites with pornographic content. And a large legal group to write letters, and follow up, make rulings, etc... Who foots the multi-billion dollar bill for the project, the US? UK? Sweden? China? UN?

Also DJ I doubt many (if any) ISP's would block .xxx domains. I DO suspect many families/businesses would (this is the reason the .xxx domain was proposed and created)

If it all works out (in the hops ISP's do block .xxx), I suspect many people would just find a new way to get porn. (Usenet, p2p, etc...)

Yeah, you're probably right.

And, if they tried to force all of the pron sites to .xxx, the peeps on 4Chan would perk up and crack their knuckles.

I think very very few smaller porn sites would buy a .xxx at $75,. I know I wouldn't.

Also do not that most of the porn industry opposed the idea of a .xxx

Generally people viewing porn want to do it discretly by having .com it can blend into your histroy along wiht facebook and email sites, where as .xxx makes it so obvious.

If it were me, (and i shared a computer) I would use secret browsing mode (aka: Porn mode). Less educated people would be able to find what ive been looking at.

I still honestly don't think it matters that much. There's a whole plethora of web extensions and adding one more isn't that big a deal.

@Leach, I disagree with it being morally wrong. It's not even close to being able to relate it racism, it's simply classification. Let's put it like this, are movie ratings immoral simply because they classify what type of movie they are? No, it's a precautionary measure, as this would be. See say your a child browsing the web and they come across a site on google that has .xxx at the end? It's a lot easier to teach children to either avoid those sites or block those sites. Of course they would never get all the porn sites or anything like that, but at least it's a step to easier identification of something people shouldn't even be looking at anyways. Hell, the immoral thing is allowing porn sites to exist.
