Goodbye to another Piece of History/Culture

I know what they're trying to do is good, but Carnegie Hall is like cultural landmark. They should've made another building for all the school children instead of using this one that has so much history to it.

I'm sure over here that would be a listed building either way if things keep going like this there shall be no history left. I would think a building with that much importance would be protected.

Well, it is America and I'm not so sure if they're that big on cultural landmarks or not. I wouldn't know though so if any Americans wanna back up your culture, now's the time

I for one diddnt even know this existed, and i am personally against the renovation of Landmarks, i like to see them restored, but not changed, thats all i have to say about that.

there must of been like some issue with the building surely it doesn't really make sense to go spending $200 million on renovation unless there's something wrong with what was already there, I mean I'm all for looking after cultural monuments and what not and I am sure most people are the same but there's a fine line between that and standing in the way of progress and they obviously felt it would benefit more to see this place renovated.

So you'd see the Sistine Chapel renovated and tore to pieces if it made "progress"?

They're just basically turning it into a school for children, I'm sure there are tonnes of buildings that could've been used for that or new buildings built in general

well yeh but my point was that people gain a certain amount of utility from things and when you can get more utility from that thing that's when you change what you use it for which is why they haven't knocked down the Sistine chapel because people gain utility from going there a looking at it.

And Carnegie Hall didn't have utility? So people living there, there being studios and concerts and things doesn't count as a utility? And why must it be utilitarian, why can't there be respect for what it stood for, it's history? Utilitarian is just a result of the 21st Century and Capitalism spreading its wings. Basically what I'm saying is "if it don't make money, it's not worth it". That's a flaw in my opinion, some things should just be allowed to exist for things like history. Hell, Carnegie Hall is almost a museum in a way. History was made at Carnegie Hall, several times no doubt.

Rich guy and wife (bet she has money because he gave it to her to avoid tax) + their contact, Mr. Mayor of New York = unstoppable force in New York.

Bloomberg appoints the people who decide upon preservation. Rich guy is rich and can offer all sorts of things for problems to go away.

It could have needed renovation - I notice it said only 18 flats were being lived in before this venture - but it hasn't been done properly, especially seeing as they've stuck what may turn out to be a restaurant on the top.

Like someone said earlier though, restoration vs renovation. I'm all for restoration which is what they should've done, not renovation which means destroying a lot of what's there

yeah and i agree im just saying thats the reasoning behind renovating it, also it's America capitalism is what they do

Yeah, i live in a 200 year old house did we renovate it, we tried, then we lost all of our money in 9/11 and never finished, is like that, the house still has its original bones, but the kitchen is no longer in the basement, and there are 2 bathrooms now and what not.

Edit*: What i mean is, some things need change, but i certainly do not agree with renovating the Hall you are talking about even though i have never heard of it.

How'd you lose all your money in 9/11?

And this is further proof that pure capitalism is soulless, and sucks the soul out of anything around it...
