A Dilemma
Here's a problem for you and just hearing some outside advice might help with my problem.
I want to quit my job at the theatre really badly for many reasons that are of my own concern. So I could do that, but then I have no job. Now the problem is, I don't want another job cause it's all just selling stuff and I don't want to do that. Do I suck it up (like I have for years) and keep trudging through this job that literally makes me full blown depressed when I'm there, or do I leave?

Re: A Dilemma
You should first check if you can get another job... If you can the best course would be exiting the theater... If you can't, it's better that you think to yourself why is making you depressed... And try to correct it (If other people can't, you should do it yourself...).
Re: A Dilemma
but i don't want another job, they're all the same essentially, it's sell burgers at mcdonalds or sell electronics at wal-mart. not a very happy prospect, i'll only be depressed anywhere else I go
Re: A Dilemma
If you leave, you should persue your dreams... If you stay, as I said, you would need to see what makes it depressing...
It might be only with me, but... There are people, that, when I barelly talk after a full day at school, I do get sad... Maybe there's something similar going on...

Re: A Dilemma
Oh, I know why I'm depressed and I know why I want to leave. As for pursuing your dreams, if only it were that easy. First I would have to identify what my dreams were, then identify how to go about pursuing the dreams. The pursuit of dreams is a lie, it's something rich people who write books say so that more people will buy their book because it's what people want to know but it sadly doesn't exist
Re: A Dilemma
Dreams are goals you set up for your life... Things you work hard to get...
It's not things like the "dream girl" you think you like, that's a wish... it's more like the dream job you would love to do, because you think it would be better to society, or just because you trully like to do that...
A wish dies in the face of adversities... A dream keeps alive whatever it happens... It just might be hidden somewhere in your mind...

Re: A Dilemma
that's what I was talking about, sorry to confuse you with dream girls and dream jobs, i was talking about dream jobs, most people don't get them and the few that do, usually realize that it isn't quite what they were hoping for

Well... That's how life works. Most people have to do things they don't like to earn their money. You're no exception. But what makes you depressed? You should try to get a brighter view of your job, depping all over the place won't help you, and will make it worse for your co workers. Find the problems, try to fix them or improve them a little at least.

And you're telling me my view of the world is too dark? God... Brighten up. My dream is to become a game reviewer, and i can fulfill it if i want, though it would take alot of effort. Your dream is to become a director, or work with movies, and you can fulfill it if you put alot of effort into it. You can't just sit on the sofa and pity yourself and have everything fall into your lap.

Re: A Dilemma
Well... That was also an example I took away from my Integration Teacher
Anyway, people just don't get their dream jobs because they don't work hard enough... I do know a lot of people who have them... Although, one of my greatest examples, my math teacher, doesn't have it, because of what life did to him... (He got his back then GF pregnant, being the child a great friend of mine, and he had to take responsabilities, that's why he isn't a veterinary, right now... I guess) Still he uses to say that he wouldn't change anything about his life...
Maybe if you shutdown your pc more often, and go out into the world, hangout with your friends, know diferent kinds of people and so on, would cure your depression...
Also, if your job is, as you say, the source of your depression, I'll say what any shrink would say... QUIT IT!

Re: A Dilemma
if you need money, id suggest to keep the job, or if it really makes you so depressed you almost want to kill yourself then consider wal-mart.

Re: A Dilemma

Re: A Dilemma
Well this is a different topic compared to the one we usually have. Normally, someone my age would have advice, but to get to the stage I'm at in my career, its fairly obvious the only other job I have ever had is the one for work experience when I was back in school.
Only advice I can really give is reflect on what JPB said. If you need the money and can't find another job, you have to stick with it until you can find another job to move on to. But if it is truly unbearablyand unnavoidably depressing, then quiting is the best thing to do before you take rash action.

Re: A Dilemma
what if I were to say the source of the depression is from something that cannot be changed or fixed. I do not want to give any more detail as it is of a more personal matter to me. As for Thingy's comment, I'm not sure what I want. You at least know you want to be a reviewer. I pretty much have given up on the idea of film due to several reasons, main one being that for years I had the suspicion I didn't want to do it professionally mostly because of the lifestyle and then I got a more or less real taste of it a month or so ago and it pretty much cinched it that film isn't the best career path for me

See, I haven't friends, not in the manner you speak of. I know lots of people and get along fine with them in an environment such as work or school. But friends for being social, no, we're two different types of people that don't get along so well in a social scene. I know, I've tried, multiple times.
Re: A Dilemma
Do you have any pets? They can help very much. Adopt a dog, it'll be your best friend without any problems.
Re: A Dilemma
A cat and a bunny and I have a deathly fear of dogs, ok so not deathly, but dogs scare me, even the tiny ones
Re: A Dilemma
Ah..Even my dog?
Ah well.
Pets can help with depression, bt if they don't then either pets just don't have that effect on you or you are depressed beyong their help. If the latter is the case, maybe you could try antidepressants until you find a job to take if you quit the one you have now.

Re: A Dilemma
Tell me, have you ever considered being a priest? I know you don't go to church as such, but I'm sure there's a denomination for you out there somewhere.

Re: A Dilemma
I considered it for approximately 2.5 seconds once before dismissing the idea. One, this denomination doesn't seem to exist, at least not from research on the net. Two, training, you basically have to train under the confused views of the Church and spend a hell of a lot of money to learn some falsities. I imagine there's a three, but my line of thought doesn't go that far today

So you are a Calvinistic sort of guy, right?

Re: A Dilemma
Lol, sounds like me, I can't decide what i am...
Of course you didn't post this to listen to my problems.
I used to have a fear of dogs, until i met some really nice small dogs, now i love dogs. Maybe to get over your fear of dog you just need to do that...

Re: A Dilemma
Well... there is always the part where we must ask you that question:
"When where you bitten by a dog?"
"When where you bitten by a dog?"

Any other animals? You must be afraid of wolves then, I guess, but any others?

Wasn't bitten, chased by one of them big nasty ones that sometimes kill people, what are they, rotweilers or something and i was weee little when it happened
Shemuel wrote:Any other animals? You must be afraid of wolves then, I guess, but any others?
Dunno, never been around a wolf, but I imagine they'd scare me, especially with the whole "I want to eat you for supper" thing
